Sebastian Vettel: "Een honderdste van een seconde laat je altijd wel ergens liggen"

Na zes poles op rij was het in de Verenigde Staten een keer geen feest bij Ferrari op zaterdag. Sebastian Vettel was de snelste coureur van de Scuderia: hij strandde op 12 duizendsten van de pole position.

Vettel moest alleen zijn meerdere erkennen in Valtteri Bottas tijdens de kwalificatie op het Circuit of the Americas. De viervoudig wereldkampioen deelde een compliment uit aan de Fin, maar besefte ook dat hij zelf het een en ander liet liggen. Toch ziet Vettel een voordeel van een start op P2. "Vanaf de binnenkant is de afstand naar de apex van bocht 1 korter, toch? Dat is volgens mij wat ik moet zeggen nu ik op P2 sta", vertelde de Duitser lachend.

"Mijn felicitaties voor Valtteri. Het was erg spannend, want we zaten allemaal erg dichtbij elkaar. Ik dacht dat er meer zat, want ik liet in de snelle bochten wat liggen voor de tweede run. Toen ik daar in run 2 aankwam, had ik echter al wat achterstand. Ik had twee prima ronden en uiteindelijk miste ik een honderdste, en die laat je altijd wel ergens liggen. Over het algemeen ben ik blij en laten we kijken wat er morgen mogelijk is. Hopelijk hebben we een goede start en daarna een goede race."

Ferrari kan na de zomerstop vertrouwen op de sterkste motor van het veld, waardoor het team op de rechte stukken in het voordeel is ten opzichte van Mercedes en Red Bull Racing. Vettel hoopt op een goede start, maar hij weet ook dat de race niet gewonnen of verloren gaat worden bij de start en in de eerste ronde van de race.

"De aanloop naar de eerste bocht is niet zo lang en een deel gaat bergop, maar we zullen zien. Het wordt cruciaal om goed weg te komen en daarna zien we waar dat ons brengt. We starten allemaal op de mediums, dus daar heeft niemand een voordeel, maar het is een lange race. We zullen morgen een drukke race krijgen. De eerste ronde wordt belangrijk, maar ook daarna is er nog genoeg om voor te racen."

Ik kan me er niet in vinden wat Vettel zegt. Genoeg voorbeelden dat een race wél in de eerste ronde / bocht beslist kan worden. Inhalen zo snel je kunt, vandaar uit de wedstrijd vanaf p1 controleren en klaar. Kun je wel wachten, maar je weet gewoon niet of je verderop in de race nog een kans krijgt om in te halen, op de baan of via een under of overcut tijdens een pitstop of iets dergelijks

  Vanuit p1 controleren als Ferrari de afgelopen races iets heeft aangetoond is dat zij het strategisch vanuit p1 verprutsen.
  
  Omdat zij dan teveel naar anderen kijken en daarop paniekeren.

  Je begrijpt iig wel wat ik bedoel red slow, (denk ik) dat het Ferrari dan niet lukt / verkloot is er een ander verhaal. Bottas start vanaf p1, Lewis haalt hem in voor bocht één of dwingt Bottas aan de kant te gaan en pakt zo de leiding. Vervolgens zie je Hamilton niet meer terug. Hooguit even tijdens de pitstop en dan moet Bottas pitten. Zoiets. Wel vaker gezien toch ook wel buiten deze mannen om. Dus mijn punt blijft staan
  Niet eens met Vettel in deze. Tenzij iemand zinnige tegenargumenten heeft?

  Inderdaad, bijna alle races worden beslist in de eerste bocht of het is in ieder geval bepalend voor de eindstand. Zeker omdat het met deze auto's moeilijk volgen en inhalen is tenzij je 2 seconden per rondje sneller bent.

  Ik snap je punt wel en voor mercedes gaat dat zeker zo werken. Gezien de strategische afdeling die zij hebben.
  
  Laten we ook eerlijk zijn. Vettel had vorige week die tweede plek toch echt aan zijn eigen te danken door tegen het team in te gaan.
  
  Hij liet daarbij ook pijnlijk duidelijk zien wat er mis is bij Ferrari.

Niet meer, Red Bull heeft het vermeende foefje van tijdelijke extra fuel flow illegaal weten te verklaren en dat doet Ferrari pijn. Desondanks doen ze goed mee in Austin, wat maar aangeeft dat de SF90 een goede auto is.
