Formule 1 trekt Expo 2020 Dubai aan als sponsor voor 2020

De Formule 1 heeft een nieuwe sponsor aangetrokken. Tussen het eind van dit jaar en het eind van het jaar 2020 zal Expo 2020 Dubai, de eerstvolgende World Expo, de sponsor van de Formule 1 worden.

De Expo 2020 vindt tussen 20 oktober 2020 en 10 april 2021 plaats in Dubai, waarmee het de eerste editie is in het Midden-Oosten. Drie belangrijke subthema's van het evenement, waaraan 192 landen zullen meedoen, zijn kansen, mobiliteit en duurzaamheid. "Dat zijn ook onderwerpen waar de Formule 1 met veel interesse naar kijkt", staat in het persbericht dat de Formule 1 de wereld in stuurde.

Als onderdeel van de samenwerking zal de Formule 1 bij zeven Grands Prix in 2020 zowel reclameborden naast de circuits plaatsen als online adverteren voor Expo 2020. Datzelfde zal gebeuren tijdens de aankomende Grand Prix van Abu Dhabi, die over een kleien drie weken plaatsvindt.

"Een van de onderscheidende kenmerken van de Formule 1 is dat onze evenementen een eerbetoon brengen aan de landen waarin we racen. Expo 2020 doet hetzelfde voor 192 landen op één geweldige locatie", zegt Murray Barnett, directeur sponsoring en commerciële samenwerkingen van de Formule 1. "Net als de World Expo juist de F1 culturele samenwerking en innovatie toe. We zijn erg trots dat we Expo 2020 tijdens enkele belangrijke Grands Prix in 2019 en 2020 mogen promoten in de aanloop naar het evenement."

De samenwerking met Expo 2020 Dubai is niet de eerste link tussen de Formule 1 en World Expo's. De Formule 1 rijdt sinds de jaren '70 op het Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve in het Canadese Montreal. Dat circuit ligt op een kunstmatig eiland in de Saint Lawrence-rivier, die in de jaren '60 aangelegd werd voor de World Expo in Montreal van 1967.
