Carlos Sainz realistisch: "Heb zesde positie in WK niet in eigen hand"

Carlos Sainz maakte lang kans op de zesde positie in het kampioenschap, maar zelf heeft hij de hoop daarop een beetje opgegeven. De McLaren-coureur ziet zichzelf die positie niet op eigen kracht pakken.

In zijn eerste jaar bij McLaren maakt Sainz een uitstekende indruk. Aan de hand van de Spanjaard heeft het team de weg omhoog weer weten te vinden en hij is dan ook vaak op de eerste positie achter de drie topteams te vinden. In het kampioenschap staat Sainz nu zevende, slechts vier punten achter nummer 6 Alexander Albon. De Britse Thai zit echter sinds de zomerstop in een van de Red Bulls.

Sainz verwacht dan ook niet dat hij de zesde positie in het kampioenschap op eigen kracht nog kan pakken. "Ik zou het wel willen, maar het hangt niet van mij af. Het hangt ervan af of hij [Albon] het verliest. Met de auto die hij heeft en de manier waarop de Red Bull de afgelopen tijd gewerkt heeft, heb ik dit niet in eigen hand", vertelde hij tegenover onder andere GPToday.net.

"Ik denk dat wij de vierde auto op de grid hebben. Dat is vooral in de kwalificatie, want in de race is het niet zo duidelijk. We hebben het dan nog lastig om Renault te verslaan. Met alles dat in het spel komt op zondag, zoals de degradatie van de banden en de strategie, is het niet zo makkelijk om ze te verslaan als in de kwalificatie. Dat moeten we ons beseffen en hopelijk verbeteren we dat dit weekend", vervolgt Sainz.

Trots op eerste seizoen bij McLaren

Over het verloop van zijn eerste seizoen bij McLaren is hij blij en ook een beetje trots. "Ik had behoorlijk hoge verwachtingen van McLaren, maar na zo’n lastig jaar weet je niet wat er gaat gebeuren. Tegelijkertijd had ik veel vertrouwen in het team. Ik wist dat McLaren het team zou zijn dat een grote stap vooruit zou kunnen zetten en dat is precies wat er is gebeurd. Zoals je je voor kan stellen ben ik erg blij en trots.”

ik vind dat ie terecht fier en blij mag zijn op zijn seizoen.
Jammer dat Mcl deze wagen niet kon bieden aan Alonso en Vandoorne.
Benieuwd hoe ze zich volgend jaar weten te verbteren.
