Lewis Hamilton tevreden: "Vanaf eerste meters in VT2 was er een goede basis"

Lewis Hamilton kwam weinig in actie tijdens de eerste dag van de Braziliaanse Grand Prix. Hoewel hij in VT2 niet verder kwam dan de vijfde tijd, was er toch sprake van tevredenheid bij de Brit.

Twee weken terug pakte Hamilton voor de zesde keer de wereldtitel in de Formule 1. Dat deed de coureur van Mercedes door tweede te worden in de Verenigde Staten. Zonder druk is hij dan ook afgereisd naar Brazilië. De eerste dag op het Autodromo José Carlos Pace sloot hij af op de vijfde positie, achter beide Ferrari's, Max Verstappen en teamgenoot Valtteri Bottas.

Hamilton kwam in de eerste vrije training vrijwel niet in actie, maar desondanks is hij wel tevreden over het verloop van de dag, met name over de gang van zaken tijdens VT2. "In de eerste sessie ben ik niet op de baan geweest. Het team wilde wel dat ik naar buiten ging, maar ik vond het zinloos. De rest van het weekend blijft het waarschijnlijk droog, dus het heeft weinig zin om dan extra risico's te nemen."

"Het begon erg goed tijdens VT2. Vanaf het eerste moment dat ik op de baan kwam hadden we een solide basis. In de korte tijd die we hadden tijdens de sessie, hebben we een aantal veranderingen doorgevoerd. Vanavond zullen we wat werk doen om het te verfijnen en dat is cruciaal, want we hebben nu dus maar twee sessies om het op orde te krijgen voor de kwalificatie."

Mercedes moet het deze week stellen zonder teambaas Toto Wolff, die voor dit weekend is achtergebleven in Europa om zich te focussen op andere zaken dan de Braziliaanse Grand Prix. Volgens Hamilton is het amper te merken dat Wolff er niet is. "Er waait nu zo'n frisse wind hier", grapt Hamilton. "Eerlijk gezegd denk ik dat hij binnen het team zo aanwezig is dat het lijkt alsof hij er gewoon bij is dit weekend."

"Alles wat hier opgezet is, komt door hem en hij heeft hier ook de mensen op de juiste plaats neergezet. Iedereen is gewoon nog aan het werk. Hij zit niet op de pitmuur en je mist hem in de meetings, maar ik weet wel dat hij meeluistert naar alles wat we zeggen tijdens de briefings. Ik zal dus proberen me zo goed mogelijk te gedragen."

Ach Lewis , laat Ferrari en Red Bull maar lekker modder gooien naar elkaar met dat gedoe de laatste tijd , zij strijden echter nog voor de kruimeltjes , jij bent binnen , jij gaat strakjes lekker die titel vieren ;-)
