Pierre Gasly zorgde in Brazilië voor een daverende verrassing door in een chaotische race knap naar de tweede plaats te rijden. Dat zorgde vanzelfsprekend voor emotionele taferelen bij Scuderia Toro Rosso.

Het Italiaanse team stond voorafgaand aan het seizoen 2019 slechts een keer op het podium: ruim een decennium geleden won Sebastian Vettel de Italiaanse Grand Prix van 2008. Sindsdien wachtte Toro Rosso op een tweede podium, dat pas in Duitsland kwam: Daniil Kvyat werd in de chaotische regenrace derde. Zo'n vier maanden later volgde er in Brazilië echter alweer een podiumplaats.

Gasly kwalificeerde zich op de mooie zevende positie en mocht de race vanaf de zesde positie vertrekken. De hele race was de Fransman de eerste man achter de drie topteams, wat hem perfect in stelling bracht om te profiteren van de problemen en fouten die voor hem plaatsvonden. Zo bekroonde Gasly zijn sterke tweede seizoenshelft met zijn eerste podiumplaats en de eerste podiumplek van Toro Rosso in een droge race.

De vreugde bij het team, dat vanaf volgend jaar door het leven gaat als Scuderia Alpha Tauri, was enorm, zoals in onderstaande video te zien is.
