Lewis Hamilton: "Ben niet begonnen met racen voor het geld"

Lewis Hamilton is de grootverdiener binnen de Formule 1, maar geld is niet de drijfveer van de zesvoudig wereldkampioen. In een interview met BBC vertelt hij dat zijn liefde voor racen centraal staat in waarom hij racet.

Hamilton is een van de meest succesvolle Formule 1-coureurs aller tijden qua prestaties, maar in financieel opzicht is hij volgens Forbes al de succesvolste coureur aller tijden. De coureur zou bij Mercedes een jaarsalaris opstrijken van zo'n 50 miljoen dollar en daarmee zou hij dit jaar Michael Schumacher hebben afgelost als coureur met de meeste verdiensten in zijn carrière.

Geld geen drijfveer, maar wel mooie bonus

Hoewel hij dus een riante vergoeding krijgt voor het leveren van zijn diensten aan Mercedes, ontkent Hamilton dat geld de drijfveer is om te racen. De liefde voor het racen is daarvoor veel belangrijker, hoewel de Brit toegeeft dat het geld wél een leuke bonus is.

"Het ding waarvoor ik nooit begonnen ben, is het geld. Natuurlijk is het geweldig dat het binnen blijft komen - geen probleem. Dat is een bonus. Zolang dit maar niet de leidende factor wordt in wat ik doe. Ik hou van racen en dat is de kern van wat ik doe. Ik hou van de uitdaging. Ik hou ervan om op het circuit aan te komen en te weten dat deze ongelooflijk getalenteerde jongelingen mij proberen te verslaan, beter te presteren en slimmer te zijn."

"Ik hou ook van de strijd die ik ieder jaar weer moet voeren. Ik werk met deze gasten [de engineers bij Mercedes] die zoveel slimmer zijn als ik en zij geven mij het gevoel dat ik slimmer word. Het is onwerkelijk als ik ze uitdaag en ze keer op keer bewijs dat het niet klopt. Dat gebeurt vaak. Ik zeg iets tegen [Andrew] Shovlin en hij zegt: 'Nee, de cijfers zeggen dit'. Ik zeg dan: 'Het is dit en dit en dit'. Hij geeft met dan gelijk en dat voelt goed. Er zijn veel dingen zoals dat."

  Ik dacht ook al, wel aso om je ouders een tweede hypotheek te laten afsluiten omdat het wel leuk is om in formule wagens te rijden.

  @neppatsrev, het lijkt me vrij sterk dat een tienerjochie zijn ouders een tweede hypotheek kan laten afsluiten. Tekenen ervoor doen ze immers zelf.

Oftewel, Lewis wilt gelijk hebben, dan voelt dat goed. Ik zou hem ook maar gelijk geven, want als reserve-Jezus (eerlijk gejatte briljante term van iemand anders in dit forum :-)) staat hij natuurlijk dicht bij de hogere machten die alles weten.

Ik wordt altijd zo misselijk van al die schatrijke sporters, acteurs etc. die dan vrolijk gaan verkondigen dat ze het niet om het geld doen. Natuurlijk doen ze he om het geld, anders waren ze wel voor een heel gewoon salaris op ene kantoor gaan zitten.
