Horner verklaart wissel Gasly en Albon: "We moesten ingrijpen"

Christian Horner heeft een inkijkje gegeven in de redenen achter het besluit om Pierre Gasly halverwege het seizoen terug te zetten naar Scuderia Toro Rosso. De teambaas van Red Bull Racing stelt dat hij moest ingrijpen.

Na iets meer dan een seizoen bij Toro Rosso mocht Gasly begin 2019 de overstap maken naar Red Bull. Wat voor veel coureurs een droom is, liep bij de Fransman uit op een kleine nachtmerrie: de RB15 bleek een lastige auto te zijn in de eerste fase van het jaar en waar Max Verstappen om de problemen heen wist te rijden, lukte dat Gasly niet. Zijn prestaties werden niet beter, waarna hij voor België vervangen werd door Alexander Albon.

Tegenover Auto, Motor und Sport verklaart Horner dat hij in moest grijpen in de ontstane situatie, maar dat het uiteindelijk voor zowel Gasly als het team goed uit heeft gepakt. "We hebben de luxe dat we terug kunnen vallen op onze pool met coureurs. Alex werd in iedere race in de eerste seizoenshelft sterker in zijn rookiejaar. Aan de andere kant verloor Pierre meer en meer vertrouwen."

"Zijn teamgenoot scoorde drie keer zoveel punten en het verschil werd groter en groter. Je kon het ook zien aan zijn lichaamstaal: hij liet zijn schouders steeds verder zakken. We moesten reageren en hem zijn zelfvertrouwen laten terugvinden. Uiteindelijk hebben we er dubbel voordeel van. We konden Alex bij ons laten rijden en Pierre is weer in vorm bij Toro Rosso."

Terugkeer Gasly bij Red Bull niet uitgesloten

Volgens Horner is het absoluut nog niet uitgesloten dat Gasly zich op termijn weer eens mag bewijzen bij Red Bull Racing. "Natuurlijk. Als dat niet het geval was, dan hadden we dat meteen opgelost. Hij heeft echter een nieuw contract gekregen voor 2020 en daarmee ook de kans om zichzelf weer aan te bevelen voor Red Bull."

  Inderdaad. Maar als hij zich goed doorontwikkelt bij Toro Rosso, verdient hij in de toekomst ook weer een kans bij Red Bull. Het is duidelijk dat hij talent heeft en snel kan zijn, mits hij vertrouwen heeft en zich comfortabel in de auto voelt.
  
  De stap van Toro Rosso naar Red Bull kwam nu gewoon te vroeg, zeker als je het dan moet opnemen tegen een geweldenaar als Verstappen.

Wat er ook gebeurt, laat nooit je schouders zakken. Doe alsof je iets niet begrijpt en trek ze omhoog.

  Ooit trainingen gehad op dat vlak. Herkennen van stemmingen aan de hand van lichaamstaal en gelaatsuitdrukking. Je zou kunnen zeggen dat je zelfs gesprekken kan manipuleren door bewust je lichaam en gezicht te gebruiken. Zelf heb ik daar professioneel voor gepast. Maar je hebt gelijk als je zegt dat je dat tegennatuurlijk kan gebruiken.
  Echter hou je dat niet vol. Zeker niet daar waar volle concentratie nodig is. Je camouflage valt dan gegarandeerd.
  Als je het overdrachtelijk bedoelt heb je gelijk: kop op en borst vooruit. Maar Gasly is dat niet gelukt.
  De keuzes van red Bull zijn meer dan goed geweest.

stel dat Max niet zou presteren zouden ze hem dan terug mogen plaatsen naar TR. niet dat het gaat gebeuren maar weet iemand of Max bij Red Bull of Red Bull racing onder contract staat.

  Ik denk bij Red Bull Racing, net als alle onder Red Bull rijdende coureurs.
  Er is volgens mij geen verschil of je bij het hoofdteam rijd of bij Torro Rosso.
