Vergne haalt herinneringen op: "Als je geen kampioen wordt, moet je vertrekken"

Jean-Eric Vergne heeft een boekje geopend over zijn tijd in het opleidingsprogramma van Red Bull. Hoewel de tweevoudig Formule E-kampioen veel aan het team te danken heeft, herinnert hij zich een aantal opmerkelijke voorvallen.

Red Bull heeft misschien wel het meest bekende en ergens ook het meest gevreesde opleidingsprogramma van alle Formule 1-teams. Helmut Marko selecteert voorafgaand aan een seizoen een aantal coureurs die met steun van de energiedrankjesmaker kunnen racen in de opstapklassen richting de Formule 1, maar dat levert lang niet altijd het gedroomde succes op.

Als de successen uitblijven, dan is Marko onverbiddelijk en is de kans groot dat de coureur zijn steun van Red Bull verliest. Eerder dit jaar overkwam dat tweevoudig Macau-winnaar Daniel Ticktum nog na drie tegenvallende races in de Japanse Super Formula. Patricio O'Ward werd zijn vervanger, maar moest ook na drie races alweer het veld ruimen.

Vergne is ook een product van Red Bull's opleidingsprogramma. In 2012 promoveerde hij naar Scuderia Toro Rosso, waar hij drie seizoenen zou racen: in 2012 en 2013 met Daniel Ricciardo als teamgenoot, in 2014 met Daniil Kvyat. De Fransman kan zich tegenover Canal+ een aantal opmerkelijke dingen herinneren over zijn tijd in het opleidingsprogramma. "Ik ga ze niet echt afvallen, want zonder het team zou ik niet staan waar ik nu sta."

"Het is wel een moeilijk verhaal. In de Formule 3 belde hij mij eens op en hij zei: 'Kijk, Ricciardo heeft je laten zien hoe het moet. Als je het Britse F3-kampioenschap niet wint, moet je vertrekken. Dat was aan het begin van het seizoen. Na afloop van een race werd ik ook een keer gebeld. Ik mocht vanaf pole beginnen en won de race, maar Marko vond het onaanvaardbaar dat ik niet de snelste ronde had gereden. Zo zit hij eenmaal in elkaar."

RBR geeft wel weer sneller mensen de kans, dan bijv. een Ferrari of Mercedes. Wat Ferrari nu met Leclerc heeft gedaan, was toch enkele jaren geleden ondenkbaar? En zelfs nu ging het met wikken en weken.

Dat daar dan ook een handvol coureurs tussen zit, die gewogen worden, maar te licht zijn voor de F1 ; tjah.... het risico van zo'n beleid.

  Eens. Leclerc is echt een uitzonderlijke keuze van Ferrari, en bij Mercedes hebben ze eigenlijk nog nooit een echt risico genomen.
  Wat dat betreft moeten Red Bull coureurs ook niet zo klagen.
  Sainz is bijvoorbeeld ook gewoon goed terecht gekomen. Als je echt goed genoeg bent lijkt het me dat andere teams ook wel interesse in je hebben op het moment dat Red Bull dat niet meer heeft.

  Geen junior programma heeft zoveel mensen naar de F1 gebracht als Red Bull in ieder geval.
  
  in het huidige F1 veld zitten 7 coureurs die uit het Red Bull junior programma komen, in totaal kom in op 15 die via dat junior programma de F1 hebben gehaald.

  @Steven buiten dat, het hele podium (na de straffen) in Brazilië bestond uit coureurs die uiteindelijk hun carrière aan Red Bull te danken hebben

eigenlijk best jammer dat ie niet meer in de f1 rijdt, was in de 2 jaar samen met ricciardo redekijk gelijkwaardig aan elkaar (als je puur naar de punten kijkt en alle punten bij elkaar opgeteld was het iets van 38-35 punten (in het voordeel van Ricciardo) , en in 2014 reed ie Kvyat helemaal zoek.. maar ja helaas die russische markt..
