Vettel: "VT1 en VT3 in Abu Dhabi mooie kans dingen te proberen voor 2020"

Sebastian Vettel hoopt in Abu Dhabi een mooi einde aan een ietwat tegenvallend 2019 te kunnen breien. Het testen voor 2020 begint volgens de Duitser al tijdens de vrije trainingen op vrijdag en zaterdag.

De Grand Prix van Abu Dhabi geldt als een van de twee races op de Formule 1-kalender die in de schemering en half in het donker worden verreden. Voor de kwalificatie en de tweede vrije training geldt dat ze op hetzelfde tijdstip verreden worden als de race en ook die sessies vinden daardoor plaats in de schemering. Met name de tweede vrije training zal daardoor erg belangrijk worden in de voorbereiding op zowel de kwalificatie als de race.

Het gevolg is echter dat de eerste en derde vrije training overdag en onder veel warmere omstandigheden verreden worden. Dat heeft volgens Vettel twee gevolgen: enerzijds zijn de sessies voor de kwalificatie en de race niet zo bruikbaar omdat er onder heel andere omstandigheden gereden wordt, maar daar staat tegenover er in deze sessies wel het een en ander getest kan worden voor 2020.

"Het is geen probleem om ons tijdens de ochtendsessies op vrijdag en zaterdag te richten op werk voor volgend jaar. De condities zijn dan zoveel warmer dan de omstandigheden tijdens de kwalificatie en de race, dat ze qua werken aan de afstelling en de configuratie voor de race niet heel bruikbaar zijn", vertelde de Ferrari-coureur in zijn voorbeschouwing op Abu Dhabi.

"Abu Dhabi is naast de laatste race van 2019 op veel manieren ook de start van het seizoen 2020. De meeste teams zullen nieuwe ideeën voor volgend jaar uitproberen tijdens de vrije training op vrijdag. Zoals gebruikelijk volgt daarna op dinsdag en woensdag de testsessie waar we de banden voor volgend jaar en voor 2021 kunnen evalueren", aldus Vettel.

'Kans om seizoen met hoogtepunt af te sluiten'

Na de dramatisch verlopen Braziliaanse Grand Prix hoopt Ferrari op eerherstel tijdens de laatste race van 2019. Vettel weet echter dat de concurrentie sterk is en dat een zege niet zomaar binnen handbereik is. "Het is voor ons een kans om het seizoen met een hoogtepunt af te sluiten, maar we weten dat de competitie sterk is. Het zou dus een spannende race moeten worden."

  Mij lijkt me dat helemaal geen gek idee mrMonza, zoals hij al aangeeft zijn er twee trainingen redelijk nutteloos na aanloop voor de Grand Prix in Abu Dhabi dus waarom niet alvast iets testen voor volgend jaar? Lijkt me dat Ferrari of welk team om het even belang heeft alvast wat te proberen voor volgend jaar. Er valt toch niet echt wat meer te halen. Hooguit momentum om mee de winter in te nemen. Maar wat is dat waard als in Australië alles weer op 0 staat? Pluspunt voor Vettel en juist in die reden zit Hulkenberg _niet_ in die auto.
