Zelfkritiek onderdeel van persoonlijkheid Albon: "Wil mezelf altijd verbeteren"

Alexander Albon sluit in Abu Dhabi een voor hem bewogen debuutseizoen in de Formule 1 af. De zelfkritische Britse Thai hoopt een mooi einde te geven aan een jaar dat hij 'goed' noemt.

Acht maanden geleden maakte Albon bij Scuderia Toro Rosso in Australië zijn Formule 1-debuut. Spoel de tijd vooruit en de coureur sluit datzelfde seizoen af als coureur bij Red Bull Racing. Het mag gezegd worden dat Albon een hoop beleefd heeft in zijn eerste seizoen in de Formule 1, maar ook dat hij zich prima staande heeft weten te houden. Desondanks is de coureur in het algemeen erg kritisch op zichzelf.

Volgens Albon is dat het aard van het beestje. Tegenover GPToday.net vertelde hij dat hij desondanks tevreden is over zijn eerste jaar, hoewel hij soms wel even vergeet dat hij nog een rookie is. “Het is een goed jaar geweest. Ik moet mezelf soms nog vertellen dat ik een rookie ben. Bij Red Bull verdwijnt dat gevoel een beetje door de verwachtingen enzovoorts. Als ik reflecteer, dan ben ik er blij mee."

"Ik merk de goede momenten op, maar het zit in mijn natuur dat ik hard voor mezelf ben. Ik wil me de hele tijd verbeteren en ik wil me niet verbergen achter het feit dat ik een rookie ben. Ik wil dat weekend gewoon sneller zijn. Het is onderdeel van mij en het is mijn drive om me als coureur te verbeteren. Ik weet dat daar ook ruimte voor is, dus daar komt dat vandaan.”

Albon wil debuutseizoen sterk afsluiten

Voordat de winterstop begint voor Albon, zal hij dit weekend zijn eerste seizoen in de Formule 1 afsluiten met de Grand Prix van Abu Dhabi. Zelf benadrukt hij dat hij nog ieder weekend een hoop dingen leert en het doel voor de race is om het seizoen op een sterke manier af te sluiten.

“Ik wil dit weekend in ieder geval sterk afsluiten. Ik heb nu acht races gereden bij Red Bull en zelfs na de race in Brazilië had ik het gevoel dat ik dingen leerde. Het voelt alsof het beter en beter gaat. Er is nog steeds een gat dat ik wil dichten. We hebben echter nog een race en daarna een test om daaraan te werken. Ik wil het seizoen sterk afsluiten en een goede richting hebben voor volgend jaar.”
