Het gebeurt niet vaak dat coureurs met elkaar in aanraking komen tijdens een vrije training, maar in Abu Dhabi gebeurde dat wel. Valtteri Bottas en Romain Grosjean waren de betrokkenen bij het incident in de tweede vrije training.

Beide coureurs waren bezig met een racesimulatie toen ze in bocht 11 met elkaar in aanraking kwamen. Grosjean ging ietwat vroeg van zijn gas en wilde vervolgens de bocht op normale wijze insturen, toen Bottas van heel diep probeerde om de Haas F1-bolide voorbij te gaan. Dat zorgde ervoor dat er fors contact was tussen beide auto's, die door de botsing spinden.

Voor Grosjean waren de gevolgen fors: hij kon na de rode vlag-situatie niet meer terugkeren op de baan en zag zijn training dus vroegtijdig eindigen. De stewards kondigden al aan naar het incident te gaan kijken.
