Waarom willen de teams stoppen met het ontwikkelen van motoren?

De Formule 1-motorfabrikanten lijken vanaf 2022 de motorontwikkeling in de Formule 1 te willen bevriezen. De aanleiding daarvoor komt nadat Honda besloot om zich nog een jaar – tot en met 2021 – aan de sport te verbinden met Red Bull Racing en Toro Rosso.

Honda maakte afgelopen week bekend dat het tot en met minimaal 2021 in de sport te vinden is, maar of de fabrikant van auto’s en motoren ook in 2022 in de koningsklasse te vinden is, is nog de vraag. "Honda wacht met beslissen om te zien hoe de regels zullen veranderen in 2022, vooral als de motorontwikkeling stil komt te liggen om kosten te besparen, wat in hun voordeel als nadeel kan werken", aldus Red Bull Racing-teambaas Christian Horner, volgens Speed Week.

"Deze power-units zijn ongelooflijk duur en alle fabrikanten willen op dit gebied kosten besparen”, zo voegde hij toe.

Ferrari ook in voor het stilleggen van de ontwikkeling

Ook Ferrari - misschien wel het team met de snelste motor- is het ermee eens dat het "niet langer nodig zal zijn" om de motoren te ontwikkelen zodra de prestatieniveaus evenwijdig zijn.

"Er zullen zelfs enkele mogelijkheden voor het stilleggen van de ontwikkeling zijn", zei Ferrari-baas Mattia Binotto.

"Het feit dat we sommige componenten niet meer rendabel zijn om door te ontwikkelen, is omdat er slechts een zeer marginaal voordeel is in een bepaald stadium van de ontwikkeling, en het is goed voor de duurzaamheid om te beginnen met het stilleggen," voegde hij eraan toe.

Voor wat ik gelezen heb willen ze alleen de ICE ontwikkeling bevriezen,
mits er niet meer dan 10pk verschil is onderling.

Helemaal mee eens, als het ontwikkelen nog 2 seizoenen door gaat zullen de prestaties van de motoren vrijwel gelijk zijn.
Alleen maar meer mogelijkheden in combinatie met de budgetcap voor de wat kleinere teams om aan te sluiten.
Ik moet zeggen dat ik nogal sceptisch was over de nieuwe reglementen maar ik denk dat het goed is zolang er nog ruimte is om unieke wagens te ontwerpen.

Eens maar dan wel de spelregel dat er een gelijkwaardig speelveld is met een verschil van max 10 pk. We willen niet dat bijvoorbeeld Ferrari nog jarenlang kan genieten van hun bevroren motorvoordeel!

Volledige bevriezing lijkt me niet nodig. Dat ze de ICE niet verder ontwikkelen, prima.
Maar de MGU-H en MGU-K zijn elementen die in de moderne auto's hun weg kunnen vinden. Ontwikkeling van die elementen zijn mijn inziens toekomstbestendig.
Verder zou een bevriezing van de ontwikkeling alleen mogen gebeuren op basis van (nagenoeg) gelijk vermogen, anders bevries je bij voorbaat een voor- of nadeel voor teams.

Een kg benzine levert maximaal 43.000kJ energie op.
Bij een maximale flow van 100kg per uur is dat maximaal 4.300.000kJ in een uur.
4.300.000kJ : 3600 sec (in een uur) = 1194,44 kJ/s = 1194,44 kW x 1,36 = 1.624pk bij 100% rendement.

Het rendement van een normale ICE is ca. 30% om met de 160pk elektromotor op totaa; 1000pk te komen moet de ICE in een F1 auto 840pk hebben en een rendement hebben van meer dan 50%. (ca. 52%) Meer gaat waarschijnlijk ook niet lukken met een ICE en dus is de vraag wat het nut is om nog verder te ontwikkelen.

  Het was al een grote verrassing dat ze zover zijn gekomen. Het hybride V6 tijdperk begon met ongeveer 40% efficiëntie, 5 jaar later is het al 50%.

  Het rendement van 40% werd al als enorm hoog ingeschat, Mercedes ging als eerste door de 50% heen. Wie weet is er nog wel meer te halen en zouden we over 5 jaar niet raar opkijken van 60%. Het issue is echter dat de fossiele brandstofmotor niet de toekomst lijkt te hebben, dus waarom nog de investering doen?

  De ontwikkeling is ook niet geschikt voor normale auto's.
  
  Ze worden efficiënter door met een heel mager mengsel te rijden.
  Dit heeft echter tot gevolg dat de ontbranding veel heter wordt en er dus ook veel meer NOx wordt uitgestoten.
  Dit is nu precies waar we met de reguliere auto's vanaf willen omdat NOx erg schadelijk is.

Bevriezen lijkt mij niet verstandig maar een budget cap erop zou wel interessant kunnen zijn. Een achterblijver kan dan wel grotere stappen maken dan de sterkste constructeur.

En mocht er een nieuwkomer komen....

er is nog veel grond the ontwikkelen, als men wilt naar een duurzamer brandstof moet de ice ook weer verder ontwikkeld worden.
