Alonso ziet McLaren en Andretti als meest realistische opties voor Indy 500 2020

Fernando Alonso is van plan om in 2020 terug te keren op Indianapolis voor de Indy 500. De tweevoudig wereldkampioen Formule 1 ziet McLaren en Andretti Autosport als de meest realistische opties.

Momenteel zit Alonso midden in zijn voorbereidingen op zijn eerste deelname aan de Dakar Rally. De Spanjaard zal in Saoedi-Arabië namens het fabrieksteam van Toyota aan de start staan, met de ervaren Marc Coma als zijn navigator. Over zijn plannen voor de rest van 2019 is nog weinig bekend, maar de in Abu Dhabi aanwezige Alonso verklaarde daar wel dat hij van plan is om terug te keren op Indianapolis.

"Indy is het enige wat er nog ontbreekt. Als ik daar win na mijn winst op Le Mans, in het WEC, op Daytona, dan is er niets meer dat ik kan vragen. Ik zal het hoe dan ook opnieuw proberen. McLaren en Andretti zijn niet de enige opties, maar het zijn wel de beste. Ik ben loyaal aan McLaren, maar ik voelde me ook erg goed bij Andretti. Ik voel me onderdeel van dat team en ik heb daar een goede relatie."

McLaren maakt volgend jaar haar rentree in de IndyCar Series door een heel seizoen lang twee auto's in te zetten. Daarvoor is het team een samenwerking aangegaan met Schmidt Peterson Motorsports en Chevrolet. Patricio O'Ward en Oliver Askew zijn de vaste coureurs, terwijl het team een mogelijkheid open houdt om een derde auto in te schrijven voor de Indy 500.

Een factor die de komst van Alonso naar Andretti Autosport bemoeilijkt, is het feit dat het team met Honda-motoren rijdt. Door het mislukte avontuur van Honda en McLaren in de Formule 1 is de relatie tussen beide partijen niet bijzonder goed meer en dat geldt ook voor de relatie van Honda met Alonso, die regelmatig hele forse kritiek uitte op de krachtbronnen.

Alonso zal pas na afloop van de Dakar Rally een knoop doorhakken over welk team hij kiest voor zijn terugkeer op de Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Ook gaf Alonso aan dat hij open staat voor een terugkeer in de Formule 1 in 2021. Een keuze daarover stelt de wereldkampioen van 2005 en 2006 echter uit tot na de meimaand waarin de Indy 500 op het programma staat.

Zijn laatste paar jaar in de F1 begon de beste man mij de keel uit te komen, maar na een jaar afwezigheid begin ik hem steeds meer te missen in de koningsklasse.

Ik hoop echt dat Alonso in 2021 nog een keer een kans krijgt bij een team dat hem een competitive wagen kan geven.

  ik weet wel waar dat vandaan komt dat je Alonso opeens mist, de Carlos Sainz antipathie...
  
  Ik vind het ook jammer dat Fernando er niet meer bij is, maar hij is het zelf die de keuze maakte

  Royalere... en daarom heeft er maar 1 het gehaald? In theorie kan iedereen het halen... Voorbeeldje: Jacques Villeneuve... Redelijke idioot... Heeft twee overwinningen in de indy 500... Reed met een dominante F1 wagen, maar heeft geen Monaco GP. Montoya... iets minder grote idioot... Lukt t gewoon niet om Le Mans op zijn naam te schrijven... De reden hiervoor: Toyota neemt hem niet aan.
