De sfeer binnen Scuderia Toro Rosso leek na afloop van het seizoen 2019 bijzonder goed te zijn. Het team scoorde twee podiumplaatsen, eindigde op de zesde positie in het kampioenschap en besloot om bij de test in Abu Dhabi een grap uit te halen bij Pierre Gasly.

De Fransman keerde halverwege 2019 terug bij het team waarmee hij in 2017 debuteerde in de Formule 1. Na een tegenvallende eerste seizoenhelft bij Red Bull Racing wist hij zichzelf weer op de kaart te zetten met solide prestaties bij het kleine zusterteam. Die prima tweede seizoenshelft bekroonde hij in Brazilië met een prachtige tweede plaats, achter voormalig teamgenoot Max Verstappen.

Gasly mocht na afloop van de Grand Prix van Abu Dhabi tijdens de tweede dag van de bandentest van Pirelli nog wat ronden rijden om het seizoen af te sluiten. Tijdens de laatste run besloot Toro Rosso om hem in de maling te nemen. De Fransman werd door het team naar de pits geroepen, waarna de teamleden besloten om de garagedeuren alvast te sluiten en te wachten op de reactie van de coureur.
