Racing Point vreest dat 2021-auto's 'lastig te besturen' worden door eigen vuile lucht

Andrew Green heeft zich kritisch uitgelaten over de technische reglementen die vanaf 2021 in de Formule 1 gaan gelden. Hij vreest dat de nieuwe bolides zeer lastig te besturen zullen zijn, omdat de auto zijn eigen vuile lucht creëert.

De Formule 1 introduceert in 2021 een set nieuwe reglementen die als doelstelling hebben om de Formule 1 spannender te maken. Enerzijds moeten de teams dichterbij elkaar komen te zitten, terwijl anderzijds het volgen en inhalen van andere auto's eenvoudiger moet worden. Volgens Green gaat dat met de huidige opzet van de nieuwe reglementen moeilijk worden, omdat de auto's hun eigen vuile lucht creëren.

"Het draait om wat er gebeurt aan de voorkant van de auto en waar alle vuile lucht naartoe gaat. Dat is recht in de tunnels onder de auto", verklaart Green tegenover onder andere GPToday.net. Hij vreest dat er met de opzet van de reglementen, die op dat vlak weinig vrijheid geven voor eigen ontwerpen, grote problemen zullen ontstaan met het rijgedrag van de auto's, terwijl de teams het probleem met iets meer vrijheid zouden kunnen verkleinen.

Auto's worden 'aerodynamisch instabiel'

"Er zijn gebieden die wat meer vrijheid zouden kunnen krijgen rond de voorvleugel. Aan de voorzijde van de auto denk ik dat het zo beperkend is dat dit het rijgedrag van de auto pijn gaat doen. Het wordt een auto die enorm lastig te besturen is, wat volgens mij iets is wat opgelost kan worden als ze ons iets meer vrijheid geven, terwijl we wel de intentie van de auto met grondeffect en weinig vuile lucht achter de auto behouden."

"Aerodynamisch wordt de auto redelijk instabiel en dat wordt geen pretje om in te rijden. Je wil auto's die iets voorspelbaarder zijn, zodat de coureurs zeker zijn van de auto en ze kunnen aanvallen. Als ze weten wat er gaat gebeuren, kunnen ze de auto op de limiet rijden, omdat ze weten dat die stabiel is. Van wat ik op dit moment heb gezien, is geen van deze zaken het geval bij een auto voor 2021."

Ik vind dat eigenlijk wel okay. Als je dan meer skill hebt als coureur, kan je net dat kleine beetje verschil maken. Zo'n iets instabielere auto vind ik zelf wel iets hebben.

  Precies mijn idee. Wat dat betreft maakt het niet uit dat de auto zijn eigen vuile lucht creeert, als het maar niet (veel) meer wordt wanneer je dicht achter je voorganger zit. Inderdaad zal met een moeilijk bestuurbare auto de coureur meer beslissend worden. Iets wat wij als Max fans natuurlijk helemaal niet erg vinden.

  Vraag maar aan gasly hoe moeilijk de RB te besturen is :) natuurlijk zal max klagen maar uiteindelijk weet je niet hoe dat probleem de team kan worstelen, maar zal heus wel een oplossing komen :)

Een uitdagend rijdende auto is natuurlijk leuk en hopelijk komt daardoor het talent van een rijder beter naar voren. Het wordt problematisch als de auto echt onvoorspelbaar en instabiel worden, waardoor de coureurs niet weten wat er wel en niet kan. Dat levert namelijk voor ons als toeschouwers ook onbegrijpelijke situaties op.
