Pascal Wehrlein ook in 2020 ontwikkelingscoureur bij Ferrari

Pascal Wehrlein blijft ook in 2020 een van de simulatorcoureurs van Ferrari. Dat heeft teambaas Mattia Binotto bevestigd tegenover Motorsport-Total.

Voorafgaand aan het seizoen 2019 werd Wehrlein door Ferrari aangenomen als een van de simulatorcoureurs. De Duitser reed in 2016 en 2017 twee volledige seizoenen in de Formule 1, maar zijn plek bij Sauber verloor hij aan het eind van 2017 aan talent Charles Leclerc. Wehrlein koos in 2018 voor een avontuur in de DTM, waarna hij ook een rol als Formule E-coureur van Mahindra op zich nam.

Bovendien werd Wehrlein dus voorafgaand aan het seizoen 2019 aangekondigd als de ontwikkelings- en simulatorcoureur van Ferrari. Die rol behoudt hij dus in 2020, zo liet Binotto weten. "We hebben volgend jaar zeer ervaren coureurs in de simulator. De simulator wordt steeds belangrijker en daarom investeren we in de toekomst." Tevens hint Binotto er dus op dat er meerdere simulatorcoureurs in dienst van de Scuderia zullen zijn.

Dat was in 2019 ook al het geval. Brendon Hartley kwam het team vrijwel gelijktijdig met Wehrlein versterken, nadat ook hij eind 2018 zijn plekje in de Formule 1 kwijtraakte. Daarnaast maakt Ferrari in de simulator ook gebruik van de diensten van Antonio Fuoco, die uit het opleidingsprogramma van de Scuderia komt, en Davide Rigon. Laatstgenoemde werkt al jarenlang in de simulator van Ferrari en is daarnaast een succesvol GT-coureur voor het merk. Of deze mannen ook aanblijven, is nog onduidelijk.
