Ook Lucas Auer moet uit Red Bull Junior Team vertrekken

Het opleidingsprogramma van Red Bull is wederom een coureur kwijtgeraakt. De Oostenrijker Lucas Auer is na één seizoen als coureur van het Red Bull Junior Team alweer aan de kant gezet.

Na afloop van het seizoen 2018 werd verrassend genoeg aangekondigd dat Auer onderdeel ging uitmaken van het Red Bull Junior Team. De coureur, die tevens het neefje is van voormalig Formule 1-coureur Gerhard Berger, werd door de energiedrankjesmaker in de Japanse Super Formula gestald in een poging om punten voor zijn superlicentie te behalen. In die opdracht slaagde hij niet voldoende door negende te worden in het kampioenschap.

Na afloop van het seizoen heeft Auer van Red Bull te horen gekregen dat er voor hem geen plek meer is in het opleidingstraject. Dat meldt de Oostenrijkse krant Kleine Zeitung. De krant noemt twee belangrijke redenen voor het vertrek van Auer: hij zou met zijn 25 jaar volgens Helmut Marko te oud zijn voor het programma, terwijl hij anderzijds ook niet voldoende superlicentiepunten heeft om door te kunnen stromen.

Wat de nieuwe plannen zijn voor Auer met het oog op het seizoen 2020, is nog niet bekend. Een terugkeer naar Europa zou voor de hand kunnen liggen: voordat hij het avontuur in de Super Formula aanging, reed Auer vier seizoenen lang in de DTM. Zijn beste seizoen kende hij in 2017, toen hij drie keer won en zesde werd in het kampioenschap. Daarnaast heeft hij ook ervaring opgedaan in de Blancpain GT Series en de ADAC GT Masters.

Lijkt me niet meer dan logisch. Heb ook eigenlijk nooit begrepen dat hij Red Bull Junior werd. Ja, wellicht vanwege zijn nationaliteit en zijn link met Berger, maar hij was in ieder geval geen echte hoogvlieger in de klasses waar hij in reed.

Vond het überhaupt opvallend dat hij nog Red Bull Junior werd. Had toch aardig wat jaartjes er op zitten al. Desalniettemin een aardig coureur die in de DTM leuke dingen liet zien,

Alleen met een bekende naam kom je er niet, er zal gepresteerd, goed gepresteerd moeten worden. Een flinke bak geld meenemen wil ook nog wel eens een beetje helpen maar dan nog zal er gepresteerd moeten worden.

Reed redelijk sterk in F3 in het jaar dat ook Max nog in F3 reed. Maar dat gegeven zegt ook al genoeg. Waar Max zijn komeetachtige debuut een seizoen daarna maakte, is Auer een beetje blijven rondhangen en heeft nooit grote indruk gemaakt. Gevalletje "net niet".

Natuurlijk heeft zijn connectie met Berger hem wel aan wat kansen geholpen, o.a. DTM en waarschijnlijk ook dat hij is opgenomen in het RB Junior programma.
Mqar dan had ie ook echt overtuigend Super Formula kampioen moeten worden nu, en de afgelopen jaren genoeg superlicentie punten bij elkaar moeten sprokkelen. Dat is niet het geval, dus begrijpelijk dat Marko hem uit het programma haalt.

Goede rijder, echter te licht bevonden voor F1.
