Valentino Rossi mikt op overstap naar autosport na MotoGP-carrière

Valentino Rossi is in ieder geval in 2020 nog in de MotoGP terug te zien, maar mogelijk maakt de Italiaan daarna de overstap naar de autosport. Dat vertelde hij aan Sky Italia.

De teller van Rossi staat op negen wereldtitels in de motorsport: hij werd een keer kampioen in zowel de 125cc als de 250cc, om daarna zeven titels in de hoogste klasse (500cc en later MotoGP) te pakken. Rossi heeft er nooit een geheim van gemaakt dat hij ooit iets in de autosport wil doen. Zo reed hij vorige week maandag nog in een Mercedes W08 tijdens de wissel met Lewis Hamilton.

Afgelopen weekend volgde een volgend avontuur voor Rossi in de autosport met deelname aan de 12 uur van Abu Dhabi. Samen met onder andere halfbroertje Luca Marini werden ze derde in het algemeen klassement en wonnen ze de Pro-Am-klasse in hun Ferrari 488 GT3. Rossi gaf daar toe dat hij in de toekomst de overstap naar de autosport wel ziet zitten.

"Ik heb altijd gezegd dat ik een decennium in de auto's zou willen racen zodra ik mijn carrière op de motoren afrond. Ik zou vijf of zes races per jaar kunnen doen met auto's die het beste bij mij passen. De 24-uursraces op Le Mans en Spa zijn hier waarschijnlijk het beste voor." Het contract van Rossi bij Yamaha loopt eind 2020 af en de verwachting is dat hij daarna afscheid neemt van de motorsport.

ergens in 2006 werd hij serieus overwogen door Ferrari, en in 2009 even ter vervanging van Massa na diens ongeluk, maar toch werd er voor Badoer gekozen,
inmiddels is Rossi te oud om in een toonaangevende autosportklasse te racen

  Waarom te oud. Op lemans zou het prima kunnen of endurance races. Ik zou het fantastisch vinden omdat het een icoon is en hoe langer hij te bewonderen is hoe beter.

Het zou oprecht een legendarische prestatie zijn als hij op wat voor manier dan ook Le Mans wint. Ik acht de kans niet heel groot, maar dromen mag.
