Yasuaki Asaki: "Als je geen 'beesten' in dienst hebt, dan kan je niet de beste ter wereld zijn"

Yasuaki Asaki werd een aantal jaar geleden aangesteld als directeur voor de motorontwikkeling van de Formule 1-motor van Honda. De fabrikant in 2015 keerde terug in de Formule 1, nadat het eind 2008 nog uit de sport stapte. McLaren was het team waar de motoren geleverd werden, maar in drie jaar bleven de successen uit. De Japanse motorfabrikant lukte het niet om de motor probleemloos en snel te maken.

Het probleem loste zichzelf niet op. Het hele Formule 1-ontwikkelingsteam werd opnieuw opgebouwd met zijn eigen methode voor het gebruik van menselijke hulpbronnen. Asaki was betrokken bij dit project en had een duidelijke visie. "Organisaties die niet in het kader van ‘het beest zijn’ werken, kunnen niet de beste ter wereld zijn”, zegt Asaki, die het voormalige 'sterke Honda' kent.

Asaki zegt dat engineers die "niet luisteren naar wat de baas zegt" of "doen wat hij leuk vindt, maar niet te eigenwijs zijn" beesten worden genoemd. "Ik denk dat deze "beesten" de sleutel naar het succes zijn geweest.” Honda kende na de slechte periode een sterk jaar met Red Bull. Het behaalde in Australië haar eerste podium sinds 2008. De Japanners gaven het gehele seizoen alles en dat betaalde zich uit. Max Verstappen kende zijn beste seizoen ooit, waarin hij zelfs zijn eerste poles wist te bemachtigen.

Vroeger was er volgens de directeur een andere structuur bij de Japanners, met een sterke visie. "Oude ingenieurs waren allemaal dat soort mensen.” zegt de baas lachend.

“Ik ben zo'n type, dus ik kan me beter voorstellen hoe dat soort mensen denken. Er zijn veel hongerige 'beesten' in ons team nu. Zulke ingenieurs zijn moeilijk te hanteren, maar als alles overeenkomt, kunnen ze dubbel werken en kun je iets presenteren dat hen interesseert. Of je kunt zeggen dat dat belangrijk is, maar dat werkt vaak niet."

Wat ie bedoelt is dat je met de typisch Nederlandse mentaliteit ‘doe maar gewoon dan doe je gek genoeg’ en ‘steek vooral niet je kop boven het maaiveld’ je geen enkel resultaat boekt. Ik begrijp dit artikel niet helemaal. Mogelijk komt het door de vertaling vanuit het Japans? Zijn “beesten” nou simpelweg ingenieurs met een eigen visie?

  @Beemerdude Ik denk juist niet dat dit een Nederlandse mentaliteit is. Inderdaad eerder Amerikaans. De vrijheid die Nederlands over het algemeen hebben wat betreft een eigen mening en wat ze tegen hun baas kunnen zeggen is in andere landen gewoon ondenkbaar. Ook in Japan is hiërarchie erg belangrijk waaruit het gevaar bestaat dat mensen lager op de ladder met goede ideeën hun mond houden om niet degene boven hun tegen te hoeven spreken.

De Honda "winter progressie " (die ze zullen moeten maken) zal de sleutel zijn, van het wel/niet succesvol zijn in 2020. Ervan uitgaand dat het chassis...........is.
