Williams prijst instelling Russell: "Hij haalt net als Mansell alles uit de auto"

George Russell zal zich ongetwijfeld meer voorgesteld hebben van zijn eerste Formule 1-seizoen. Hoewel het een zwaar jaar was voor hem en Williams, is plaatsvervangend teambaas Claire Williams blij met de instelling van haar coureur.

Nadat hij in 2018 kampioen werd in de Formule 2 kreeg Russell de kans om zich bij Williams te bewijzen in de Formule 1. De jonge Brit kwam echter op het slechtst denkbare moment binnen bij het team: het team arriveerde in februari te laat bij de wintertests en vervolgens bleek de bolide veel te langzaam te zijn. Desondanks heeft Russell een voorbeeldige instelling gehad in 2019, zo vertelde Williams aan Autosport.

"George heeft ons enorm verbaasd. Tenzij je onderdeel van dit team bent, weet je niet hoe zwaar het is geweest. George wist waar hij aan begon. Hij kon het met eigen ogen zien, maar we hebben hem ook duidelijk gewaarschuwd over hoe het ging zijn. Vanaf het eerste moment gedroeg hij zich op een voorbeeldige manier, want het is zwaar voor hem geweest dat hij niet de auto had die hij had willen hebben."

Situatie nog lastiger door sterke Norris en Albon

Wat de situatie voor Russell nog lastiger maakt volgens Williams, is het feit dat F2-concurrenten Lando Norris en Alexander Albon wel in competitieve auto's zitten. "Het is lastig voor hem om te zien dat zijn collega-promovendi uit de Formule 2 nu in auto's zitten die veel competitiever zijn die van hem. Zodra hij wel een competitieve auto heeft, zal hij zich volledig bewijzen."

De manier waarop Russell rijdt, doet Williams denken aan Nigel Mansell. "Zodra hij op zaterdag in de auto stapt, verzamelen de jongens zich rond de tv's en kijken ze ernaar uit om hem te zien rijden. Het is een beetje als Nigel Mansell: hij haalt gewoon al het mogelijke eruit en dat mag dan misschien een seconde langzamer zijn dan een plek in Q2, maar hij knalt er wel indrukwekkende ronden uit."

Laat hem nog maar lekker in de luwte rijpen en ervaring opdoen. In dat mannetje zit veel meer dan wat wij buitenstaanders zien, kunnen zien.
