Ericsson verlegt focus in 2020 volledig naar IndyCar-avontuur bij Ganassi

Marcus Ericsson lijkt de Formule 1 steeds verder achter zich te laten liggen. De Zweed zal in 2020 waarschijnlijk een andere rol gaan vervullen bij Alfa Romeo Racing dan afgelopen jaar het geval was.

Na een dienstverband van vier jaar bij Sauber werd Ericsson voorafgaand aan het seizoen 2019 aan de kant geschoven door het team, dat in 2019 door het leven ging als Alfa Romeo. Kimi Raikkonen en Antonio Giovinazzi kregen de voorkeur boven hem, maar wel bleef hij nog aan als reservecoureur. Dat combineerde hij met een rol als IndyCar-coureur bij Schmidt Peterson Motorsports.

Ericsson miste door zijn werk als reserve bij Alfa Romeo een race in de IndyCar, omdat hij naar België af moest reizen door ziekte bij Raikkonen. Uiteindelijk hoefde de Zweedse coureur tot zijn eigen frustratie niet in actie te komen. "Dat is het probleem met de social media van tegenwoordig. Alles gebeurde heel snel en Alfa Romeo koos ervoor om niets te zeggen, dus het kwam op de verkeerde manier naar buiten", vertelde hij aan Expressen.

'IndyCar krijgt prioriteit, niet reserverol bij Alfa'

Aan dezelfde Zweedse krant vertelde Ericsson ook dat hij waarschijnlijk aan Alfa Romeo verbonden zal blijven, maar tegelijkertijd zal de focus volledig naar de IndyCar Series gaan. Dat houdt waarschijnlijk in dat hij vanaf 2020 geen reservecoureur meer is van het Italiaans-Zwitserse team, zodat hij zich volledig kan richten op zijn avontuur bij topteam Chip Ganassi Racing.

"Ik heb een lange relatie met Alfa Romeo en Sauber en ik weet redelijk zeker dat ik een rol blijf spelen, maar ik heb ook gezegd dat ik me voor 100 procent op dit IndyCar-seizoen wil richten", verklaart Ericsson, die aangeeft dat de gesprekken nog gaande zijn. "De prioriteit is niet om reserve in de F1 te zijn, de prioriteit is IndyCar. Ik wil er echter niet te veel over zeggen, want het is gecompliceerd met meerdere factoren. We zullen zien wat Alfa Romeo en Ganassi willen."
