Wurz: "Niet eerlijk om te oordelen over Williams, maar de stopwatch liegt niet"

Na een zeer mager 2018 kende Williams een zeer slecht 2019. Alexander Wurz, tot afgelopen zomer coureurscoach bij het Britse team, wil de verklaring die hij daarvoor heeft echter niet uit de doeken doen.

In de afgelopen jaren is Williams in een duidelijke neerwaartse spiraal terechtgekomen. Daar waar het team in 2014 en 2015 nog derde werd bij de constructeurs, maar in 2018 en 2019 reed het team stijf achteraan rond. Afgelopen seizoen scoorde Robert Kubica het enige punt van het team tijdens de chaotische Grand Prix van Duitsland, terwijl nieuwkomer George Russell puntloos bleef.

Wurz, zelf in het verleden ook coureur bij Williams, wil geen oordeel vellen over zijn voormalig werkgever. "Het is niet eerlijk om daarover te oordelen, maar in de racerij is het duidelijk: de stopwatch liegt niet. Het laat je arbeid en je kwaliteiten zien. Het is aan Williams om te onderzoeken wat er verkeerd ging en wat er anders moet. Ik heb daar mijn mening over, maar die ga ik niet openbaar maken."

Wurz onder indruk van Russell en Kubica

Hoewel de slechte Williams-bolide een goede inschatting van zijn kwaliteiten lastig maakt, stelt Wurz dat Russell een goed debuutseizoen gedraaid heeft. "Voor George was het alsnog een goed jaar, omdat er geen druk op stond en van Robert, die een uitstekende ontwikkelaar is, kon leren. Voor George is het belangrijk snel in een team te komen dat op hoog niveau rijdt of in een sterke opgaande lijn zit."

"Hij moet er klaar voor zijn als er een plekje vrijkomt bij een topteam. Zijn vaardigheden, zoals het inhalen, zijn echter nog niet in te schatten, omdat hij dit jaar in een eigen categorie heeft gereden. Voor Robert neem ik mijn pet af dat het hem lukte om terug te keren. Hij had problemen met het materiaal. Wat hij als mens heeft bereikt, vind ik sensationeel."

Het was pas "sensationeel" geweest als hij boven verwachting had gepresteerd. Helaas was dat niet zo en viel het tegen.

  Ja, andersom was beter geweest: "Hij had problemen als mens, maar wat hij met het materiaal bereikt heeft was sensationeel."
  Maar toch vind ik het wel chique dat Wurz er niks over uit de doeken doet. (Zouden er meer moeten doen, ook als ze er door journalisten naar gevraagd wordt.)
  En het blijft hoe dan ook een bijzonder verhaal, de herkansing van Kubica. 'Terugkeer' of 'come-back' kun je het eigenlijk niet noemen, gezien de resultaten.

Eigenlijk vraag ik mij af hoe lang Williams nog verder kan zo. Sinds die flapdrol Lowe bij het team kwam ging het alleen maar achteruit.
Er is ook geen geld voor ontwikkeling en ,issen waarschijnlijk ook de mensen ervoor. Ik hopp dat ze in 2021 er nog zijn en ze in de basis een goede auto hebben, want het zou jammer zijn als een team als Williams verdwijnt.
