Seidl: "We kunnen de volgende stap richting de top zetten met McLaren"

McLaren kende een sterk seizoen in 2019 met een vierde plek in het kampioenschap voor constructeurs. Het doel van het geherstructureerde team uit Woking is om de kloof met Mercedes, Ferrari en Red Bull in het aankomende seizoen te dichten.

In 2021 worden de nieuwe reglementen van kracht, maar het team zal niet te snel volledig inzetten op 2021. Op het juiste moment zal het team de focus proberen te verleggen. Andreas Seidl denkt dat McLaren goed bezig is aan de voorbereidingen op het volgende seizoen. "Allereerst ben ik erg blij met de vooruitgang die ik in de fabriek zie rond de voorbereidingen voor het seizoen 2020”, zegt Seidl op de website van McLaren. "Ik denk dat we de zwakke punten van de MCL34 in 2019 volledig in kaart hebben gebracht en het is goed om te zien dat het hele team heel hard werkt om vooruitgang te boeken. We kunnen nog genoeg doen.”

Gat is niet te dichten, maar wel te verkleinen

Seidl gelooft niet dat het gat met top drie teams (Red Bull, Mercedes en Ferrari red.) gedicht zal worden, maar wel dat het verkleind kan worden. “Ik denk dat we de volgende stap kunnen zetten, de kloof met de top drie-teams kunnen verkleinen." Op langere termijn wil Seidl McLaren naar de top brengen. “Ons doel is om op de lange termijn weer de beste in het kampioenschap te worden, en we weten dat we nu ver achterlopen", legt hij uit.

Ieder team wil natuurlijk de beste auto hebben. McLaren weet dat het niet mogelijk is om volgend seizoen de beste auto te hebben, maar desondanks blijft het Britse team alle teams met respect behandelen. “We blijven bescheiden en we blijven onze rivalen respecteren. We kennen onze zwakke punten en we zullen hard blijven werken om vooruitgang te boeken. Het is een avontuur en we voelen een goede dynamiek binnen het team. De benadering binnen het team en de betrokkenheid van de aandeelhouders stemt me optimistisch over het opnieuw winnen, maar je moet realistisch zijn over wat je van het ene op het andere jaar kan bereiken."

Seidl komt op mij bescheiden, realistisch, maar wel ambitieus over.
Als dit al een hoog bla bla bla gehalte vindt,dan ben ik benieuwd wat je van bijvoorbeeld Helmut Marko vindt.

Ze zijn bij McLaren gelukkig wel iets bescheidener geworden in vergelijking met een aantal jaren geleden en dat siert ze! Hopelijk zitten ze er komend seizoen nog dichter op de top 3 en kunnen ze in 2021 (met alle nieuwe regels) vechten om de overwinningen en hopelijk zelfs het kampioenschap!!!

Wat een verademing is Seidl ten opzichte van zijn voorganger. Ik hoop van harte dat ze snel de aansluiting vinden en mee kunnen strijden om overwinningen.

Wordt spannend voor McLaren. Eerder gaven ze aan dat de MCL35 niet “het concept” van de MCL34 gaat volgen. Nieuw concept dus, om een grotere stap voorwaarts te maken. Maar dan moet die keuze wel goed uitpakken. Ik vind het getuigen van de juiste houding en hoop dat ze een goede keuze hebben gemaakt. Ik hoop op een stevige 4e plek bij de constructeurs. Dat is vooralsnog het hoogst haalbare. En dan moet die Renault motor ook wat betrouwbaarder worden. Nog één jaartje en dan kunnen ze het doen met Mercedes.

Alle signalen wijzen weer in de richting dat McLaren weer een echt homogeen team aan het worden is. Daarbij moeten we vooral de inbreng van beide jonge coureurs die naar verwachting ook nog veel beter kunnen gaan worden niet vergeten.
