Waarom tekende Honda geen langer contract dan tot en met 2021?

Christian Horner, de teambaas van Red Bull Racing, zei dat voortdurende twijfels over de productiekosten van de Formule 1-power units ertoe leidden dat Honda zich nog een jaar als Red Bull-leverancier zou verbinden.

De adviseur van het Oostenrijkse team, Dr. Helmut Marko, suggereerde eerder dat het team de Formule 1 zou verlaten als Honda hetzelfde zou doen, maar de samenwerking zal doorgaan in het eerste jaar van de nieuwe reglementen van Liberty Media in 2021.

De pogingen van Liberty om de motorregelgeving, evenals andere gebieden, te herzien, stuitten op sterke weerstand van Mercedes en Ferrari, wat betekent dat de krachtbronnen vrijwel onveranderd blijven in het nieuwe tijdperk van de Formule 1.

Horner zei dat Honda nog steeds niet zeker weet hoe het zich op de lange termijn aan de sport kan binden. "Allereerst is het geweldig nieuws dat ze een compromis hebben gesloten na 2020," vertelde Horner aan Sky Sports. "Dus we hebben nu ten minste twee jaar waarin we absoluut gelijk hebben."

Honda twijfelt nog

Honda heeft maar tot en met 2021 getekend, wat betekent dat Honda zich na het eerste jaar met de nieuwe reglementen zich nog terug kan trekken. "Ze wachten gewoon af om te zien welke regels zullen komen voor 2021 en vooral 2022 met betrekking tot de goedkeuring voor bevriezing van PU's om de kosten te verlagen. Deze motoren zijn erg duur en vanwege de betrokken technologie willen alle fabrikanten samen wat kostenbesparingen op dit gebied zien, dus daar zit de twijfel bij Honda."

"Natuurlijk hadden we het over de toekomst, maar de discussie ging niet over 2021." Horner wist niet goed hoe hij hierop verder in moest gaan. “Het is een geweldige samenwerking tussen Red Bull en Honda, zoals we dit jaar zagen. Het belangrijkste aspect van de vooruitgang zal de absolute duidelijkheid van deze regels zijn.”

  Maakt niks uit, ze hebben in elk geval twee jaar absoluut gelijk.. ;)

  Er gaat zo gigantisch veel geld in die Motor de afgelopen jaren puur om het gezichtsverlies te compenseren wat men heeft opgelopen bij Mclaren , en komend seizoen is het budget weer met 140 miljoen verhoogd om Max toch maar kampioen te kunnen laten worden .
  
  Ik denk dat ze bij de directie van Honda het niet voor eeuwig aan de aandeelhouders kunnen verkopen dat een groot deel van de winst in 4 torretjes van de autosport word gegooid , en dat ze met een gedegen plan willen kunnen komen dat men zowel prestaties geeft maar tegelijkertijd relatief normale bedragen uitgeeft .
  
  Dat plan zal er pas ergens in 2021 zijn , dus ik snap het wel .
  Men wil ook bij Honda weten waar men aan toe is .

Niet te hopen, maar als Honda en Mercedes zich terug zullen trekken uit de F1 over 'n paar jaar, blijft er niet veel meer over.

Volgens mij heeft Honda laten weten dat ze ook een groot voorstander zijn in bevriezing van de motorenregels. Ze staan er dus hetzelfde in wat dat betreft.

De opstelling van Honda ten aanzien van regelgeving (kostenbesparing) zal niet veel anders zijn bij de andere drie fabrikanten. En dan staar Liberty dus met de rug tegen de muur en zal het er dus wel van komen dat componenten qua ontwikkeling bevroren zullen gaan worden. En dan blijft Honda dus ook in de F1.
Ik zie het tekenen t/m 2021 en niet verder vooral als een statement.

Ik snap niet waarom het allemaal zoveel moet kosten zo’n 1.6 motor is toch instapklasse bij Mercedes en andere autofabrikanten ? ;-)
