Albon ziet 'enorme' groei aan populariteit in Thailand, hoopt op meer Thaise coureurs

De populariteit van Alexander Albon in thuisland Thailand heeft een enorme vlucht genomen sinds de coureur begin 2019 in de Formule 1 mocht debuteren. Dat verklaarde de Britse Thai tegenover onder meer GPToday.net.

Albon werd in 2019 de eerste coureur die onder een Thaise licentie in de Formule 1 racete sinds Prins Bira in 1954. Naar eigen zeggen blijft zijn populariteit met ieder bezoek aan Thailand groeien. "Het is enorm, vooral de groei in Thailand. Er wordt veel over gesproken, ook in Azië in zijn algemeenheid", verklaart Albon. "Zodra het kon, ben ik dit jaar vaak naar Thailand geweest en het wordt iedere keer groter. Het is erg spannend."

Ook sprak Albon de hoop uit dat er in de toekomst meer Thaise coureurs in de Formule 1 komen, omdat hij gelooft dat het land de fundamentele ingrediënten heeft om dat te laten gebeuren. "Ik wil dat er meer mensen uit Thailand betrokken raken bij de F1. Het is een heel spannende sport en we hebben de faciliteiten, circuits en manieren om het te doen. Het zou erg leuk zijn om te zien."

'Verhuizen naar Europa voor racen kan duur zijn'

Hoewel Albon graag meer Thaise coureurs op de grid zou willen zien, begrijpt hij dat er een aantal obstakels zijn die overwonnen moeten worden. Hij hoopt dat er iets gedaan kan worden voor Aziatische coureurs. "Ik denk dat het al vroeg begint in karting en dergelijke. De meeste van onze races zijn in Europa en het is natuurlijk erg duur om je kind mee te namen om in Europa te racen, maar daar is de competitie."

"Als de competitie op een continent blijft, kan het behoorlijk lastig worden om coureurs uit andere gebieden te krijgen. Zoals je ziet hebben we op dit moment ook geen coureur uit de Verenigde Staten. Wat dat betreft is het gewoon moeilijk, maar het gaat de goede kant op. Zelfs in Thailand komen er nu wat goede kinderen aan, dus hopelijk zien we snel wat Aziaten."

De laatste keer dat ik in Bangkok was had ik het idee dat al die Tuktuk chauffeurs prima mee zouden kunnen doen in het F1-veld. Ze kunnen uitstekend inhalen. :)

Thuisland mag tussen aanhalingstekens. De jongen spreekt (net als ik) amper Thai.

Op zich zijn de Thai wel racegek, maar eigenlijk meer op het motorracen.

Qua infrastructuur hebben ze een Grade 1 Circuit (Buriram), dus een Thaise GP zou in de toekomst mogelijk kunnen zijn, bijvoorbeeld met steun van het Thaise Red Bull, hoewel 't mss te dicht bij de Vietnamese en Singaporese GP ligt qua commerciële aantrekkelijkheid. (Overigens vind ik Kaeng Krachan wel een leuker circuit; Buriram is een tikkeltje tè Tilke). Daarnaast heeft het circuit bij Pattaya (Bira Circuit) ook een relatief nieuw kartbaan liggen, dus wie weet zien we met de toegenomen populariteit van Albon een échte Thai in de opstapklasse in de nabije toekomst. Sowieso vind ik het een tikkeltje tegenvallen qua aantallen Aziaten en hun niveau.

Kan Albon niet een Maleisisch paspoort en race licentie aanvragen? Dan is de kans ook weer groter dat we Sepang terugkrijgen op de kalender. Dat fantastische circuit wordt bij de meesten wel gemist denk ik zo.

In Thailand zijn ze sinds de komst van Albon in de F1 van één naar twee formule1 fans gegaan.
Dat is maar liefst een stijging van 100% !!!
