Naoki Yamamoto wil IndyCar-testen, maar sluit racen in die klasse uit

Naoki Yamamoto maakte in oktober een verdienstelijke indruk tijdens zijn vrije training voor Toro Rosso in Japan. De Japanner zou graag ook nog een keer een IndyCar-bolide uitproberen, maar racen in die klasse gaat hem te ver.

Yamamoto is als coureur verbonden aan Honda en komt normaal gesproken uit in de Super Formula en Super GT. In beide series is hij minimaal een keer kampioen geworden. Honda zorgde er ook voor dat Yamamoto op Suzuka de eerste vrije training voor Scuderia Toro Rosso mocht rijden. Daarbij was hij slechts een tiende langzamer dan Daniil Kvyat. Tegenover Speed Week verklapte Yamamoto dat dit naar meer smaakte.

"Als ik weer in Japanse kampioenschappen als de Super Formula of Super GT aantreed, dan wil ik nog meer titels winnen. Maar in oktober mocht ik een F1-auto besturen en ik heb het gevoel dat het echt cool is om in een wereldkampioenschap aan te treden. Als ik de kans krijg, dan zou ik graag in deze auto's tegen andere hoog aangeschreven coureurs willen aantreden."

Racen in IndyCar Series geen optie voor Yamamoto

"Het zou geweldig zijn om nog een keer in een Formule 1-auto te rijden, maar ook een IndyCar-test staat op mijn wensenlijst." Daar blijft het dan wel bij voor Yamamoto, die geen trek heeft in een volledig IndyCar-avontuur met Honda. "Daar heb ik geen interesse in. Het is een serie waarin de concurrentie groot is, maar het is ook een zeer gevaarlijk kampioenschap."

Er is slechts één ding dat Yamamoto tegenhoudt om de oversteek naar de Verenigde Staten en de IndyCar te maken: de ovals waarop gereden wordt. "Als er alleen gereden werd op normale circuits en stratencircuits, dan zou ik daar absoluut naartoe gaan. Maar de ovals - ik heb een familie en het is een te groot risico. Daarom zal ik daar niet gaan racen."

  Kijk maar eens met welke snelheden ze soms met 3 wagens naast elkaar over die banen knallen. Soms heel dicht tegen de muur. En het veld zit veel dichter op elkaar dan met de F1.

  Hogere snelheden, weinig tot geen uitloopstroken dus direct vol in de muur (en soms in de hekken die als rasp werken).
  
  Barrichello heeft zijn contract na een jaartje Indycar ook ingeleverd omdat hij een paar kleuren scheet als 'ie over zo'n oval banjerde!
