Russell: "Banden laten werken in F1 is als het oplossen van Rubik's Cube"

Het laten werken van de Formule 1-banden van Pirelli is niet eenvoudig. Williams-coureur George Russell vergelijkt het kunstje met het oplossen van de bekende Rubik's Cube.

Pirelli levert al sinds 2011 de banden in de Formule 1, maar dat heeft de Italiaanse firma niet alleen maar positieve kritieken opgeleverd. In de afgelopen jaren veroorzaakte het werkende window van de banden regelmatig problemen voor teams. Russell is blij dat hij in zijn debuutseizoen de compounds van Pirelli heeft leren kennen, zodat hij in 2020 kan proberen de banden te maximaliseren en meer snelheid te vinden.

"Ik heb nu een jaar ervaring in het begrijpen van deze banden en wat ervoor nodig is om ze goed te laten werken. Dat is wat ik wil optimaliseren [in 2020]. Ik weet dat ik mijn werk goed kan doen als ik de banden goed aan de praat krijg. Maar om ze goed aan de praat te krijgen, is het alsof je een Rubik's Cube moet oplossen", vertelde Russell tegenover onder andere GPToday.net.

Bandenkennis uit F2 maar beperkt bruikbaar in F1

Russell kon in de GP3 en de Formule 2 al ervaring opdoen met rubber van Pirelli. Toch stelt hij dat hij maar in beperkte mate iets had aan de kennis die hij in die series over de banden had verzameld. "Het heeft een klein beetje geholpen, maar de Formule 1 is natuurlijk een heel ander spel", vertelde hij over zijn ervaring met Pirelli in de Formule 2.

"Het is lastig. Dat geldt niet alleen voor mij, maar voor iedere coureurs. De algemene karakteristieken van de Pirelli-band is in de laatste tien jaar niet echt veranderd. Ze veranderen her en der een beetje, maar er zijn geen drastische veranderingen. Ze zijn misschien harder of zachter, makkelijker of moeilijker op te warmen, maar er zijn eigenlijk geen drastische veranderingen."

Dus de banden laten werken is een kwestie van 6 stappen…..

Zo spannend is een Rubiks Cube ook weer niet. Er zijn mensen die een willekeurige cubus in 10 seconden oplossen en robots die het in minder tijd doen.

Maar ik snap wel wat Russel hier bedoeld. Veel variabelen en onduidelijkheden, gecombineerd met een Klein window waarin de banden goed werken. Tjah, dat maakt het lastig, maar niemand hefet gezegd dat F1 makkelijk is of zou worden.
