Daniel Ricciardo onthult wie hij als zijn grootste rivaal ziet

Daniel Ricciardo heeft onthuld welke coureur hij als zijn persoonlijk grootste rivaal ziet. Verrassend genoeg luistert hij niet naar de naam van voormalig teamgenoot Max Verstappen, maar naar Valtteri Bottas.

In gesprek met Top Gear verklaarde Ricciardo ook waarom hij de Mercedes-coureur als zijn grootste rivaal ziet. Er is niet een specifiek moment of een specifieke actie waardoor de concurrentie met Bottas begon. Ricciardo verwijst in zijn antwoord terug naar de periode dat hij voor het eerst in Europa kwam racen. Dat was in 2007, toen hij tweede werd in de Formule Renault Eurocup. De kampioen: Valtteri Bottas.

"Dan kom ik toch uit bij Valtteri Bottas", vertelt Ricciardo. "We hebben vaak tegen elkaar geracet in de juniorseries. Ik heb niet gekart in Europa, dus ik heb niet echt een coureur waar ik op tienjarige leeftijd voor het eerst tegen streed. Bottas was er echter wel toen ik begon te racen in Europa, want we zaten in hetzelfde kampioenschap. We streden en groeiden samen op, en op een of andere manier hadden we volgens mij toch een soort rivaliteit."

Ook in de Formule 1 streden Bottas en Ricciardo een aantal seizoenen met elkaar om de prijzen. Dat was met name in 2017 en 2018 het geval, met Bottas bij Mercedes en Ricciardo bij Red Bull Racing. Daar waar de Fin in 2019 nog vier races wist te winnen, kon de Renault-coureur afgelopen jaar niet eens meedoen om de podiumplaatsen.

  RIC kent gewoon zijn plaats hij kan niet voor de hoogste trede strijden dus is zijn grootste rivaal diegene die met hem om de plaatsen daarachter strijd ;-)

Hij begint al op dezelfde manier te denken als Abiteboul, heerst daar een besmettelijk virus in dat team? Of ziet hij Bottas als rivaal omdat hij graag tweede coureur naast Lec wil worden?

Bij een goed ontwikkelde zelfreflectie zijn de coureurs die qua niveau en talent het dichts bij je staan je grootste rivalen, niet te verwarren met je grootste idolen natuurlijk. Het siert Daniel Ricciardo dat hij dat ook gewoon zo benoemd.

  Dan zal ik Ricciardo verkeerd begrijpen.
  Maar ik lees het meer dan dat hij bedoelt te zeggen, een rivaliteit die over meerdere jaren en diverse klassen zich afgespeeld hebben, dus eigenlijk zijn hele carrière als coureur en niet enkel als F1 coureur.
  Je grootste rivaal nu hoeft niet persé dezelfde te zijn als waar je de meeste rivaliteit mee hebt gehad.
