Hamilton, Mercedes en Flörsch genomineerd voor prestigieuze Laureus Awards

Lewis Hamilton is genomineerd voor de prestigieuze Laureus Sports Awards voor beste sporter van het jaar. Dat heeft de Brit te danken aan het binnenhalen van zijn zesde wereldtitel in de Formule 1.

Het is de zesde keer dat Hamilton een nominatie ontvangt voor de prijs voor de beste sporter van het jaar. Dat was hij eerder in 2009, 2015, 2016, 2018 en 2019 al. Tot dusver kon de Mercedes-coureur die prijs echter nog niet in ontvangst nemen. Wel won hij in 2008 de prijs voor doorbraak van het jaar bij de Laureus Awards. In 2020 hoopt Hamilton de prijs voor het eerst in ontvangst te mogen nemen.

De strijd om de prijs zal Hamilton voeren met vijf andere atleten. Marathonloper Eliud Kipchoge, MotoGP-kampioen Marc Marquez, voetbal-superster Lionel Messi, tennisgrootheid Rafael Nadal en de van blessures teruggekeerde golfer Lionel Messi zijn de overige genomineerden.

Mercedes en Flörsch ook genomineerd

Naast Hamilton is ook Mercedes genomineerd voor een van de prijzen. Het Duitse team maakt kans op de titel sportploeg van het jaar. Daarbij krijgt het concurrentie van Champions League-winnaar Liverpool, rugby-wereldkampioen Zuid-Afrika, de wereldkampioenen van de Spaanse nationale basketbalploeg, NBA-kampioen Toronto Raptors en het vrouwenvoetbalteam van de Verenigde Staten, dat ook gekroond werd tot wereldkampioen.

De autosport heeft nog een derde genomineerde en wel in de categorie comeback van het jaar. Sophia Flörsch is de kanshebster op die prijs, nadat zij zich terug wist te knokken na haar zware crash in de F3-race op Macau in 2018. Zij neemt het op tegen zwemmer Nathan Adrian, rugbyspeler Christian Lealiifano, basketballer Kawhi Leonard, voetbalploeg Liverpool en tennisser Andy Murray.

De winnaars in de verschillende categorieën worden op 17 februari in Berlijn bekendgemaakt.
