Ontwerper: "Circuit Zandvoort meest uitzonderlijke wat we gedaan hebben"

Circuit Zandvoort gaat momenteel op de schop om de Formule 1 begin mei na 35 jaar afwezigheid te kunnen verwelkomen. De renovatie is volgens ontwerper Jarno Zaffelli niet zonder risico, omdat Zandvoort een historische plek is.

Circuit Zandvoort en organisator DutchGP slaagden er in 2019 in om de Grand Prix van Nederland terug te laten keren op de kalender van de Formule 1. Van 1 tot en met 3 mei 2020 racet de koningsklasse van de autosport weer over Circuit Zandvoort. Momenteel wordt er nog hard gewerkt aan het circuit, waaraan onder andere een steile kombocht wordt toegevoegd. Toch zijn er volgens Zaffelli risico's bij de verbouwing.

"Dat komt simpelweg omdat Zandvoort anders is dan andere circuits. We veranderen een historische plaats op een aantal punten en introduceren kombochten; dat hebben we al decennia niet gezien in de Formule 1", verklaart Zaffelli tegenover de Telegraaf. "Begin mei wordt duidelijk hoe het gaat. Qua lay-out is Zandvoort het meest uitzonderlijke wat we hebben gedaan. Dit is het circuit waar het meeste gevoel en leven in zit."

Zandvoort 'een uniek circuit' waar alles in zit

Zaffelli moet door de ligging van Circuit Zandvoort in de duinen voor het eerst werken aan een circuit dat gebouwd is op een zandgrond en ook dat is een uitdaging. De ontwerper ziet het bovendien als een uniek circuit. De Italiaan vergelijkt Circuit Zandvoort dan ook met Suzuka, wat volgens hem een circuit is waar ook alles in zit.

"Zandvoort is uniek. De duinen, de grindbakken, de wind en nu ook nog twee kombochten. Het enige waar ik het mee kan vergelijken, is Suzuka in Japan. Dat is mijn persoonlijke favoriet", verklaart Zaffelli. "Dat is ook een circuit waar alles in zit en dat populair is bij de coureurs. Het is geen toeval dat zowel Zandvoort als Suzuka werd ontworpen door Hans Hugenholtz."

Over de manier waarop Zandvoort zich uit heeft gelaten over Assen ben ik verre van te spreken, maar eerlijk is eerlijk, qua circuit aanpassingen niks dan lof van mijn kant.

  Ik zou de Kumho bocht nog wat meer naar het noord-oosten verlegt hebben (kan makkelijk binnen huidig circuitterrein) zodat de aanloop naar de laatste kombocht wat langer wordt en er dus NOG meer kans zou zijn op een uitremactie in Tarzan.

  Helaas ontwerpt deze club niet gehele circuits. Zij richten zich op de aanleg en aanpassing van circuits.

Hoop dat het op tijd klaar komt.
Eind februari draait de wind en krijgen wij Siberische kou deze kant op.
Min 15 gevoelstemperatuur min 30 krijgen wij dan.
Ga dan naar eens asfalteren.
Goed in Zandvoort iets minder koud maar als nog min 5 tot 10 ook dan doe je niet veel hoor.
Mijn glazen bol kan er naast zitten maar dit zag ik in de almanak.
Warm in januari koud in februari.
