'Liberty Media en Formule 1 raken commercieel directeur Bratches kwijt'

Liberty Media moet waarschijnlijk op korte termijn gaan zoeken naar een nieuwe commercieel directeur. Sean Bratches legt volgens Autosport mogelijk al volgende week zijn taken neer bij de commerciële rechtenhouder van de Formule 1.

Bratches was sinds 2016, het jaar waarin Liberty de commerciële rechten van de Formule 1 overnam, als directeur commerciële operaties betrokken bij Liberty en de Formule 1. Samen met voorzitter en CEO Chase Carey en motorsportdirecteur Ross Brawn vormde hij het driekoppige managementteam van de sport, maar de samenstelling van de directie gaat waarschijnlijk op korte termijn al veranderen.

Recent gaf Bratches al aan dat hij moeite had met het vele reizen en het wonen in Londen. De Amerikaan wilde graag meer tijd doorbrengen met zijn familie in de Verenigde Staten, waaronder zijn vier kinderen, en daarom minder tijd doorbrengen in Londen en bij de races. Die wens lijkt dus ingewilligd te worden door het vertrek van de voormalig directeur van ESPN.

De geruchten van een mogelijk vertrek van Bratches speelden al langer en Carey ging tijdens de Grand Prix van Abu Dhabi nog in op de situatie. "Wat betreft Sean zijn we in gesprek, maar er is nog geen besluit genomen", vertelde Carey destijds. "Sean heeft een uniek leven waarbij hij familie heeft in de Verenigde Staten, maar hij zelf in Londen woont."

Mocht Bratches daadwerkelijk vertrekken, dan is het mogelijk dat er binnen afzienbare tijd twee topmannen van Liberty's Formule 1-afdeling vertrekken. Ook Carey wordt in verband gebracht met een vertrek, waarbij hij zijn rol als CEO neerlegt. Wel zou de Amerikaan dan nog voorzitter blijven. Mercedes-teambaas Toto Wolff wordt regelmatig genoemd als potentiële opvolger van Carey als de CEO van de Formule 1.

Begrijpelijk, niet bij je familie (en ongetwijfeld vrienden) kunnen zijn en dan ook nog in een vreemd land met een andere cultuur waar je je waarschijnlijk niet helemaal 100% in voelt is gewoon een flinke pil. Dan kan je je baan nog zo leuk vinden, op de lange termijn heeft dat een tol op je.
