Latifi verwijst naar thuisstad Toronto met keuze voor startnummer 6

Nicholas Latifi is in 2020 de enige debutant in de Formule 1 en net als zijn concurrenten moest de Canadees een startnummer kiezen voor tijdens zijn carrière. De keuze is gevallen op startnummer 6.

Latifi maakt in 2020 als nummer 2 van het Formule 2-kampioenschap van 2019 promotie naar de Formule 1. Hij zal in Australië zijn debuut maken bij Williams, het team waaraan hij afgelopen jaar al verbonden was als test- en reservecoureur. Voorafgaand aan zijn carrière moest Latifi nog wel een startnummer kiezen en de keuze is dus gevallen op 6.

Voor Latifi was de keuze een heel logische, zo verklaarde hij in een video op de social media-kanalen van Williams. "Ik kom uit Toronto, en Toronto staat bekend als The Six", vertelt de Canadees. The Six, gestileerd ook wel The 6ix, is een bijnaam voor Toronto die door de uit Toronto afkomstige rapper Drake populair geworden is. Van origine is het een verwijzing naar 416 en 647, de netnummers die in Toronto gebruikt worden.

Het startnummer 6 was in 2016 voor het laatst in gebruik in de Formule 1. Destijds werd Nico Rosberg met Mercedes wereldkampioen met dat startnummer, waarna de Duitser plotseling zijn vertrek uit de sport aankondigde. Latifi is ook niet onbekend met het startnummer: hij reed in 2018 en 2019 ook al met dat getal op zijn bolide, destijds als Formule 2-coureur van DAMS.

Zes, voor de 6 seconden per ronde die hij toe gaat geven op de kop van het veld. Het is al weer lang geleden dat iemand niet mocht starten vanwege de 107% regel. Latifi heeft het talent om die reeks te beëindigen.
