Argentinië hoopt 'binnen enkele jaren' Formule 1 weer te verwelkomen

Argentinië heeft interesse om de Formule 1 terug te halen. Matías Lammens, de minister van toerisme en sport van het Zuid-Amerikaanse land, maakte tegenover AS wel duidelijk dat hier steun van het bedrijfsleven voor nodig is.

Het voornemen van Argentinië om na ruim twintig jaar afwezigheid terug te keren op de kalender van de Formule 1, past binnen de ambities van de sport om haar kalender uit te breiden. Liberty Media, de eigenaar van de commerciële rechten van de Formule 1, heeft plannen om de kalender in de komende jaren te laten groeien tot 25 races. Daar is nog ruimte voor en Argentinië wil dus aan boord komen.

Lammens benadrukt wel dat de Argentijnse overheid het waarschijnlijk niet zelf kan financieren. "We zijn een aantrekkelijke plaats voor sport, vooral voor de atleten die we hebben. We zouden graag in de komende jaren de Formule 1 terug willen halen. Hoewel het een belangrijke investering is, denk ik dat we met private sponsoren kunnen samenwerken om de F1 binnen te halen."

De Formule 1 was in het verleden regelmatig te gast in Argentinië. Tussen 1953 en 1998 stond de wedstrijd 21 keer op de kalender. De laatste winnaar van de race was Michael Schumacher. Wel zijn er een groot aantal andere auto- en motorsportklassen die een bezoek brengen aan het Zuid-Amerikaanse land. De MotoGP komt sinds 2014 jaarlijks naar Argentinië, terwijl ook het WK Superbikes, het WRC en tot en met 2017 ook het WTCC.

Vroeger waren de races in Buenos Aires fantastisch. Verstappen die ging shinen in zijn Simtek en Arrows, Badoer op zijn dak. Laat maar weer komen!
