Williams heeft 'gezond budget' voor Formule 1-seizoen 2020

Williams gaat met een gezond budget het seizoen 2020 tegemoet. Dat verklaart plaatsvervangend teambaas Claire Williams, nadat het team in de afgelopen jaren inkomsten verloor door de matige prestaties op de baan.

Afgelopen seizoen eindigde Williams voor het tweede seizoen op rij op de laatste positie bij de constructeurs en dat houdt in dat Williams in 2020 wederom het laagste bedrag aan prijzengeld krijgt uitgekeerd. Wel krijgt het team nog een bonus. Bovendien raakte Williams sponsoren PKN Orlen (met Robert Kubica vertrokken naar Alfa Romeo) en Unilever (aan McLaren) kwijt.

Williams maakt zich echter geen zorgen over het financiële plaatje voor 2020, mede doordat het team via Nicholas Latifi en Roy Nissany enkele sponsoren binnen heeft gehaald. "Sponsoring is niet eenvoudig, maar lastig. Dat weten we allemaal en ik denk dat geen enkel team de sponsormarkt makkelijk vindt. Ons bedrijfsmodel leunt daar stevig op en dat is nooit makkelijk", vertelde Williams aan Autosport.

"Dat is al decennia zo, maar steeds lukte het om een gezond budget te verzamelen waarmee we konden doen wat we moesten doen gedurende het seizoen. Dat geldt ook voor dit jaar. Zoals iedereen weet, hebben we een meerderheidsbelang in Advanced Engineering verkocht. De opbrengsten daarvan vloeien naar het F1-team om het budget te verstevigen. Ik maak me dus geen zorgen over het budget voor 2020."

Naast de verkoop van een meerderheidsbelang in Williams Advanced Engineering wist Williams ook een aantal nieuwe sponsoren aan te trekken om het verlies van geldschieters PKN Orlen en Unilever op te vangen. Met dank aan Latifi werden koffiebrander Lavazza, de Royal Bank of Canada en Sofina Foods al aangekondigd als nieuwe sponsoren.

Williams zal niet zo snel omvallen gezien de naam en historie. Zie Bernie nog wel de boel redden mocht het zover komen.

  Dan moet er wel heel snel verbetering in gaan komen. Het is een legendarisch team maar zonder resultaat koop je daar niks voor. Bernie is een zakenman en zal het op zijn manier willen doen als ze aan de afgrond staan. En laat Williams daar nu net heel eigenwijs in zijn. Die weigerde zelfs hulp van Mercedes. Aan de ene kant heel moedig maar aan de andere kant.... zie de afgelopen 2 jaar.

  Ieder team wil vooruitgang en ik hoop echt dat ze de aansluiting kunnen vinden. In de tijd van Lawrence Stroll schijnt er geïnvesteerd te zijn in infra, dat betaald zich niet direct uit maar daar kunnen ze hopenlijk nu de vruchten van plukken

  Ze kunnen wel best niet het zelfde als vorig jaar doen, wintertests remember .. erna zaten ze hopeloos achterop, kan je evengoed met 9 teams racen, dit gezegd zijnde ik hoop dat 2021 verandering brengt qua budget, het zou wat erg zijn mocht ook Williams eruit gaan.

  Ze hebben hun belang in WAE maar één keer kunnen verkopen. Daardoor hebben ze het komende seizoen een “gezond” budget maar niks meer om op terug te vallen.
  Ze brengen het als een positief iets, maar je bezittingen verkopen om aan je “vaste lasten” te voldoen is geen duurzaam business plan.

Als ze op deze manier doorgaan zie ik het somber in voor Williams. Als ik hun was had ik meer de samenwerking met Mercedes opgezocht want de meeste F1 fans weten toch precies welke onderdelen waar gekocht worden en waarom.

Zelfs met die extra miljoenen gaan ze niet veel sneller worden want het ontbreekt ze aan engineers. Het is enorm complex en daarnaast zitten de goeie bij de betere teams.

Met de Budgetcap op komst zal er alleen nog maar meer moeten worden samengewerkt.
