Pat Fry begint op 5 februari met werkzaamheden bij Renault

Renault heeft onthuld op welke datum Pat Fry gaat beginnen aan zijn klus als technisch directeur van het team. Op 5 februari treedt de Brit officieel in dienst bij zijn nieuwe werkgever.

Begin november kondigde Renault de komst van Fry al aan. Die benoeming was onderdeel van een aantal verschuivingen in het management van het Franse team, waarbij hoofd aerodynamica Peter Machin vervangen werd door Dirk de Beer. Bij Renault zal Fry aantreden als technisch directeur, waarbij hij verantwoordelijk is voor het chassis. Rémi Taffin vervult die functie voor de motorafdeling.

Halverwege 2019 werd Fry met verlof gestuurd door McLaren, het team waarbij hij verantwoordelijk was voor de bolide van 2019. Bij de Britse renstal werd hij echter vervangen door James Key en dat zorgde ervoor dat Fry met gardening leave mocht. In de tussentijd werd hij al wel aangenomen door Renault, maar pas na afloop van zijn contract bij McLaren kon Fry daadwerkelijk aan de slag bij zijn nieuwe werkgever.

De startdatum voor Fry is nu dus bepaald. Renault kondigde aan dat Fry per 5 februari officieel aan de slag gaat. Ook zal de nieuwe technisch directeur aanwezig zijn bij de 'seizoensopening' van de Franse fabrikant. Die vindt op 12 februari plaats in Parijs. Fry keert daarmee terug bij het team waarmee hij in 1987 de Formule 1 betrad. Het team ging toen nog door het leven als Benetton.

Ik vraag me af wat Fry kan betekenen voor Renault. Hij heeft op mij nog geen grote indruk gemaakt als technisch directeur.

  Ha, ha, Clemenza, en jij geeft ze wel het vuurtje van die dikke sigaar van je nietwaar? OT: ik ben het met je eens dat Fry, net als Paddy Lowe, weliswaar een team dat goed draait, draaiende kan houden, maar het is geen visionair die goede ontwerpen kan maken die nodig zijn om een team naar een hoger plan te kunnen tillen.
