Jerez heeft oren naar terugkeer Formule 1 en is in gesprek met Liberty Media

De Formule 1 keert in de nabije toekomst misschien terug naar Circuito de Jerez. Dat blijkt uit een interview dat de Spaanse politicus Juan Marin heeft gegeven voor een online informatieportaal van Andalusië.

Jerez is geen onbekende in de Formule 1. In de jaren '80 en '90 was de koningsklasse van de autosport regelmatig op het circuit te gast. De laatste editie van de Spaanse Grand Prix was in 1990 (gewonnen door Alain Prost), terwijl in 1997 nog de Europese Grand Prix op het circuit werd verreden. Die laatste race werd spraakmakend door de poging van Michael Schumacher om Jacques Villeneuve uit de race te tikken.

De Spaanse Grand Prix ging na 1990 naar Barcelona, waar het Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya tot op de dag van vandaag de gastheer is. Wel staan er vraagtekens bij hoe lang die race nog op de kalender blijft staan. Afgelopen augustus kwam met moeite een éénjarige deal tot stand met Liberty Media en de Formule 1. Die deal loopt na 2020 af, en dus is er een kans voor Jerez.

Gesprekken met Liberty Media afgetrapt

Politicus Marin geeft toe dat er al gesprekken geweest zijn tussen Liberty en het circuit, naar verluidt over een contract met de looptijd van drie jaar. "Ik kan nog niets zeggen. Sommigen zeggen dat het al rond is. Ik zal echter nog niets bekendmaken, totdat ik de handtekening onder het contract zie staan. Er zijn onderhandelingen gaande, en in mei of juni zullen we meer weten", aldus Marin.

Volgens Marin wordt het wel een duur project voor Jerez en Andalusië: niet alleen de hosting fee is hoog, ook moet het circuit zelf in gereedheid worden gebracht. "De Formule 1 geniet van zowel Jerez als Andalusië veel interesse, maar er zijn ook andere geïnteresseerde landen. Het is een investering en een zeer hoge fee, maar er is ook werd aan het circuit nodig."

  Motorland Aragón vind ik een stuk mooier, is ook nog eens hypermodern, en daardoor zonder al te hoge kosten F1 proof te maken vergeleken met het verouderde Jerez.

In de Algarve Portugal ligt een schitterend circuit. Weet iemand waarom daarover nooit gesproken wordt? Mooi plek, mooie faciliteiten, lekker weer.

  Mee eens, ik zie rie baan ook graag op de kalender, ook mooier dan Estoril. Schitterende baan. Maargoed dat is Portugal, en ik heb het idee dat men daar nu niet schreeuwt om een race.

  Autódromo Algarve in Portugal is een prachtig circuit. Het zou geweldig zijn als de Formule 1 daar zou rijden. Maar in Jerez hebben ze belangstelling voor de F1, zij zijn in gesprek, dat heb ik over Algarve nog niet gehoord. En het gaat om veel geld hé. Dus Algarve zie ik zo snel nog niet gebeuren. Ik vraag me ook af hoe lang de F1 dit financieel model nog vol kan houden. Er komt een moment waarop Europese landen ineens massaal gaan afhaken.

  Fantastis circuit Algarve. Een keer geweest te kijken voor het WK Superbike. T valt me op dat Portugal sowieso vaak over het hoofd gezien wordt in meerdere sporten. Fantastisch land en naar mijn mening is de warmte daar net even wat prettiger dan in Frankrijk of Italie.

Ik verkies Jerez ook boven Barcelona, zeker nadat ze de laatste twee razendsnelle bochten die chicane hebben veranderd en er een chicane tussen ligt.

Jerez heeft een mooie mix van bochten en een paar mooie inhaal punten. Ook het hoogte verschil hier en daar maakt het een mooie baan, ik zeg doen!

Ik was nog heel jong toen ik de laatste F1 races op Jerez heb gezien, maar imo is dat circuit met de huidige wagens echt niet veel beter dan Barcelona qua inhaalmogelijkheden. Dan nog liever Estoril of zelfs het nieuwe Portimao circuit
