Aitken verkast naar Williams en wordt reservecoureur

Jack Aitken heeft niet lang hoeven wachten op zijn volgende klus bij een Formule 1-team. De Koreaanse Brit is in 2020 de officiële reservecoureur van Williams en zal onder andere tijdens minimaal een vrije training in actie komen.

Gisteren maakte Aitken zelf nog via social media bekend dat hij niet langer onderdeel uitmaakte van de Renault Sport Academy en het F1-team van de Franse fabrikant. Daar was de 24-jarige in 2018 en 2019 reserve- en testcoureur. Die werkzaamheden combineerde hij met deelname aan de Formule 2, waarbij hij vorig jaar namens Campos drie zeges pakte en vijfde werd in het kampioenschap.

"Het is een enorme eer om me als reservecoureur bij Williams te voegen voor het seizoen 2020", vertelde Aitken over zijn nieuwe job bij het Britse team. "Williams is een team met een prachtig erfgoed en ze draaien al heel lang mee. Ik kijk ernaar uit om direct bij te dragen aan hun ontwikkeling via mijn simulator- en testwerk."

Aitken op stand-by als invaller bij Williams

Aitken zal als reservecoureur van Williams afreizen naar alle Grands Prix tijdens het seizoen 2020. Daar is hij aanwezig voor het geval Nicholas Latifi of George Russell wegens ziekte of een blessure moet afhaken. Bovendien zal hij ook minimaal één keer een vrije training rijden, terwijl hij ook in de media- en marketingactiviteiten van Williams ingezet zal worden in 2019.

"Uit zijn prestaties blijkt dat Jack duidelijk een jonge coureur is met een geweldige carrière voor zich", verklaart plaatsvervangend teambaas Claire Williams. "Wij geloven erin dat hij de juiste eigenschappen heeft om de top van de sport te kunnen bereiken. Jack heeft zijn kunnen laten zien in de Formule 2 en de GP3 Series, en we kijken ernaar uit om te zien wat hij kan bereiken als de reservecoureur van het team."

De overige plannen van Aitken in het seizoen 2020 zijn nog onduidelijk. Gezien zijn aanwezigheid bij de races, lijkt het voor de hand liggend dat hij voor een derde seizoen in de Formule 2 gaat. Voor superlicentiepunten lijkt Aitken het niet te hoeven doen: met zijn tweede plek in de GP3 in 2017 en de vijfde plek in de Formule 2 van afgelopen seizoen heeft hij genoeg punten verzameld om een superlicentie aan te kunnen vragen.

Voor mijn gevoel heeft Williams ondertussen al een 10 reserve/testcoureurs. Aitken, Nissany en Chadwick volgens mij ook. Ben er vast nog wel een paar vergeten.

  Misschien is het dan ook een voorwaarde vanuit Williams dat eventuele testcoureurs ook in het bezit zijn van een MBO diploma "eerste autotechnicus - technisch specialist personenauto's" zodat zij zelf de bolides kunnen ontwikkelen, aanpassen, afstellen, poetsen, herstellen en eventueel een APK keuring kunnen uitvoeren?
  Dat bespaart natuurlijk dan weer kosten op andere functies. ;)

Aitken naarWilliams waar hij dus meer mogelijkheden krijgt dan bij Renault. Dan weten we weer de werkelijke reden. Met een knipoog naar enkelen hier waaronder vooral ene Rimmer. Gaat dus om de feiten he, niet wat je denkt....
