Ricciardo: "Netflix heeft F1 op de kaart gezet in Verenigde Staten"

De introductie van Drive to Survive heeft de Formule 1 volgens Daniel Ricciardo goed gedaan in de Verenigde Staten. De Renault-coureur denkt dat de sport daar door de Netflix-serie 'op de kaart' is gezet.

Over een aantal weken wordt op Netflix het tweede seizoen van Drive to Survive gelanceerd. Vorig jaar maakte de serie haar debuut en de kritieken waren veelal positief. Vooral voor 'nieuwe fans', die nog niet echt bekend waren met het reilen en zeilen in de sport, kregen op een goede manier te zien hoe de sport in elkaar zit. Ook in de Verenigde Staten was de show relatief populair.

Ricciardo vertelde tijdens de Daily Show van Trevor Noah dat hij het gevoel heeft dat Drive to Survive de Formule 1 'op de kaart' heeft gezet. "Ik heb absoluut het gevoel dat de F1 meer een ding wordt, hier in de States. Ik breng hier wel wat tijd door, en tot een jaar geleden zei niemand 'hoi' tegen mij - niet op een slechte manier, maar ze zouden me niet herkennen als F1-coureur. Nu is het 'we zagen je op Netflix, het was geweldig'. Dat is cool."

'Alles hangt van je materiaal af'

Bij de talkshow sprak Ricciardo zich ook nogmaals uit over zijn veelbesproken overstap naar Renault. In zijn eerste jaar bij de nieuwe werkgever bleef de gehoopte progressie uit, waardoor het Franse team niet verder kwam dan de vijfde positie in het kampioenschap. Ricciardo's contract loopt aan het einde van 2020 af en mogelijk gaat hij daardoor op de rijdersmarkt nog een rol spelen.

"Helaas is het niet zoals in het tennis, waar je je racket slechts tot op bepaalde hoogte de schuld kan geven. Er is zoveel uitrusting en alles hangt daar ook vanaf", verklaart Ricciardo. "Zo zit de sport in elkaar, en dan is het aan jou om te proberen jezelf bij het beste team te krijgen, zodat jij weer de beste uitrusting krijgt."

Feitelijk heeft DR gelijk, als hij het heeft over de afhankelijkheid vh materiaal. Maar is dat ooit anders geweest? Wijkt dat af van andere sporten waar je dezelfde afhankelijkheid kent. Daarnaast, hij heeft een, potentieel, winnend team verlaten. Voor Fransozen notabene. In dat opzicht moet hij niet gaan klagen.

Ik blijf erbij dat dit zijn enige echte keuze was. Renault is het enige fabrieksteam waar plek was en waar hij duidelijk als eerste rijder binnengehaald kon worden.

Nu is het aan hem om het team op te bouwen en te laten zien wat hij kan. Hij is nu de leider die alle neuzen dezelfde kant op moet krijgen. Van de bandenpoetsers, koffie mensen tot aan de leiding. Dat doe je door bijzondere dingen te laten zien en keihard te knokken achter de schermen. Ik denk dat hij een heel eind kan komen. Met Ricciardo en, in potentie, financiele ruimte en ontwerp talent kan Renault groeien tot een winnend team. Kampioenschappen niet. Dan moeten ze allemaal hetzelfde doel voor ogen hebben.

Het is aan ricciardo nu om te laten zien dat het hem lukt om een paar gp's te winnen. Lukt dat dan zal hij de rest van het team zover moeten krijgen alles te doen voor hem om een kampioensteam neer te zetten.

  Daarbij is ricciardo technische niet zo vernuftig en lijk hij meer in de hoek 'dit voelt beter/slechter' te waar anderen meer kunnen uitleggen wat iets doet. Als het team eromheen dan ook nog eens, al jare, niet slagvaardig is dan houd het op. Ocon gaan geruchten van dat hij meer technisch vernuft heeft

  Danny kan geen team om zich heen bouwen en de eerste rijdersrol naar zich toe trekken.
  Dat zagen we bij RBR al en bij Renault weer.
  Hij is een joviale lachebek. Een sfeermaker. En snel.
  Maar Max had veel meer technische know how, was nog veel sneller en dwong door zijn acties al snel bewondering en respect af.
  Danny heeft ook mooie acties maar niet zo mooi. Het hangt allemaal rondom laat remmen. Iets wat met de Renault niet kon. Als gevolg daarvan liet hij maar weinig zien het afgelopen jaar. De man van 30 miljoen maakte maar amper een betere indruk tov Hulkenberg en die werd nota bene als tweede rijder in alles benadeeld.
  Bij Renault weten ze ook al dat Danny weg is zodra hij naar Ferrari, Mercedes of McLaren kan. Zelfs terug naar RBR is niet uitgesloten.
  Renault zet al in op de veel goedkopere en bovendien Franse Ocon.
  Denk ook niet dat Ocon op snelheid zoveel onder zou doen en met zijn Franse mentaliteit veel meer aansluiting in het team zal vinden.
  Danny is klaar bij Renault en hoe eerder hij dat zelf in ziet hoe beter dat voor hemzelf is.

  Amper beter dan Hulkenberg... 54 - 37 in punten, 11 - 4 in onderlinge raceresultaten, 16 - 5 in kwalificaties, gemiddeld kwalificeerde Ricciardo 9,9de tegen Hulkenberg zijn 11.05.
  
  Hij heeft hem eigenlijk gewoon ingemaakt. Aan het begin van het seizoen nogal onwennig met de Renault en wat rare fouten daardoor, daarna gewoon weer heerlijk constant. Hulkenberg is dan ook geen Gasly.
