Mekies: "Sebastian Vettel nog steeds sleutelfiguur binnen Ferrari"

Sebastian Vettel krijgt in 2020 een zware dobber aan teamgenoot Charles Leclerc. Sportief directeur Laurent Mekies is van mening dat de Duitser, ondanks zijn lastige campagne in 2019, een belangrijke pion is voor Ferrari.

Na vier wereldtitels op rij tussen 2010 en 2013 maakte Vettel begin 2015 de overstap naar Ferrari. Tot dusver lukte het hem niet om in dienst van de Scuderia een wereldtitel te veroveren. In 2019 vielen de prestaties van de Duitser tegen, zeker ten opzichte van zijn veel minder ervaren teamgenoot Leclerc. De Monegask scoorde op alle vlakken beter en eindigde ook voor Vettel in het kampioenschap.

Het vertrouwen in Vettel is echter onverminderd, zo benadrukt Mekies. "Hij heeft natuurlijk leiderschap in zijn DNA zitten en hij is een belangrijke pion in ons project. Het lukt hem altijd om de juiste woorden te vinden, hij is kalm en motiveert mensen. Op papier geldt dat je meer uit een coureur kan halen als hij langer bij het team blijft, en ik zou dit in het geval van Sebastian willen bevestigen", vertelt de Fransman aan Autosprint.

Gelijke kansen voor Vettel en Leclerc in 2020

De 32-jarige Vettel is in het bezit van een aflopend contract bij Ferrari, terwijl Leclerc anderhalve maand geleden een nieuwe verbintenis tot en met 2024 tekende. Teambaas Mattia Binotto benadrukte al dat dit geen gevolgen heeft op de pikorde binnen het team. "Ze zullen het nieuwe seizoen op hetzelfde niveau beginnen, met het team als prioriteit", verklaart de Italiaan, nadat Vettel vorig jaar het seizoen nog als eerste rijder aanving.

"Als er een moment in het seizoen is waarbij een van beiden een grote voorsprong heeft in de titelstrijd, dan zullen we ernaar kijken", vervolgt Binotto. "In dat scenario zou het heel normaal en natuurlijk zijn om de pijlen op een van beiden te richten en onze kans op de winst te maximaliseren. Nu is het echter nog te vroeg om daaraan te denken."

IK denk dat Leclerc het niet aankan als hij tweede viool moet spelen, daar is hij veel te arrogant voor

  Hij zal zich erbij moeten neerleggen als Vettel een auto krijgt waar hij zich prettig in voelt. Want na Singapore was Vettel de betere race coureur van de twee. Maar het is eerder aan de teambaas wat hij ermee gaat doen, die heeft al steken laten vallen op dit gebeid. Zie Rusland en Brazilië als voorbeeld.
