Kimi over onzinnige media: "Er zijn veel dingen belangrijk waar de media niet over schrijft"

Kimi Raikkonen, de Alfa Romeo-coureur, vertelde aan GPToday.net veel over zijn leven. In een eerder gepubliceerd stuk, vertelde hij over zijn rol als papa en het racen in de Formule 1. Raikkonen’s carriere begon vroeg, maar zijn Formule 1-carriere pas laat. De Fin was altijd te vinden in het rallyracen en was daar erg goed in. Hij reed met een Red Bull gesponsorde bolide rond. Raikkonen staat bekend om zijn korte antwoorden, maar voor één keer maakt hij een uitzondering.

Kimi Raikkonen was te zien in een berenpak op het kerstfeest van Alfa Romeo. De media maakten er een heel ding van, ook een aantal Nederlandse nieuwssites, en daar was Kimi niet zo blij mee. "Ik weet zeker dat er veel dingen zijn die veel belangrijker zijn om over te schrijven. Maar dat is hoe de media nu werken, helaas. Ik ben nooit van plan in het nieuws te komen”, zo zegt hij tegen GPToday.net.

Raikkonen wist altijd al dat hij vader wilde worden. En hij is duidelijk dat de verandering ten goede is geweest. “Ik geniet van ouderschap. Hoe ouder ze worden, hoe meer plezier je hebt. Ik ben dol op tijd met hen doorbrengen, het is zo leuk om ze te zien opgroeien. "Ondanks zijn besluit om te blijven concurreren op 40-jarige leeftijd, voegt hij eraan toe: "Het is belangrijk voor mij om te proberen zo lang mogelijk thuis te blijven en betrokken te zijn bij hun jeugd, tijd met hen door te brengen, te spelen en hen te helpen”, zo vertelt hij tegen GPToday.net.

Hij begon ook zijn passie door te geven: slechts een paar maanden geleden reed hij een kart met Robin - Aceman, zoals hij hem noemde. Zijn vrouw maakte een video, nam enkele foto's en uploadde het allemaal op sociale media. Zoals elke ouder tegenwoordig zou doen. Omdat thuis Kimi geen Iceman is. "Helemaal niet. Ik denk dat we allemaal anders zijn op het werk en in ons privéleven. We hebben een heel eenvoudig leven.”

Kimi praat ook nog over de poging om van de C39 een competitieve auto te maken in zijn tweede jaar. "De bolide werkt beter dan vorig jaar en dat is goed. Hoewel het op dit moment onmogelijk is om te voorspellen waar we dit jaar zullen zijn. We hebben een beter idee na de eerste paar races. Op zoek naar verbeteringen aan de auto is een verhaal zonder einde.”

Mercedes is te kloppen

Gevraagd naar het gevoel van onoverwinnelijkheid dat Mercedes uitstraalt, zegt Raikkonen: "Ik denk niet dat ze onoverwinnelijk zijn. Ze hebben in de loop der jaren races verloren, veel zelfs. Het is waar dat ze de afgelopen seizoenen vaker aan de top van het kampioenschap stonden. De regels zijn veranderd en ze zijn de laatste tijd consistenter en de snelste geweest. Dus ik niet.”

Williams verwachten we al soort van achteraan maar voor Alfa en Haas zie ik een grote grijze wolk hangen en ook die verwacht ik redelijk achteraan de grid. Ergens zonde... Kimi's F1 carrière gaat dan uit als een nachtkaars.

Hallo, Kimi was tot zijn 20e aan het karten en deed dat zo goed dat Peter Sauber hem in 2001 als 21 jarige in de Formule 1 bracht, zonder veel ervaring in tussenliggende klassen dus. Hij zal toen vast ook wel eens in een rallywagen hebben gereden, maar daar was dus weinig gelegenheid voor.
21 jaar gold i.i.g. toen nog als extreem jong voor de Formule 1.

Pas in 2009 ging hij serieus aan de bak in de rallysport.
