Formule 1-teams starten seizoen online

De Formule 1 gaat zondag 22 maart van start met een reeks virtuele Grands Prix. Vanaf nu komen elk weekend verschillende Formule 1-coureurs en wereldwijde bekende mensen in actie tijdens de F1 Esports Virtual Grand Prix-serie. Om 21.00 uur Nederlandse tijd op YouTube, Facebook en Twitch.

Door het Coronavirus werd de Chinese Grand Prix al snel afgeblazen. Het eerst raceweekend van de 2020-kalender stond op het punt van beginnen, maar door de hevige uitbraak van het virus besloot de organisatie samen met de FIA en de FOM om de race niet door te laten gaan. De FIA volgde even later met een verklaring; ook de Grands Prix van Vietnam en Bahrein werden uitgesteld. Deze week maakte de FIA bekend dat ook de Spaanse en Nederlandse Grands Prix niet op de geplande datum plaats gaan vinden, Monaco blies zelf de boel af.

Online van start

Formule 1 kent sinds een aantal jaar de e-sport battle. Hieraan doen verschillende gamers mee van de Formule 1-teams. Een bekende Nederlander is Rudy van Buren.

De eerste race is meteen een nachtrace. Het is namelijk de Grand Prix van Bahrein. De deelnemers rijden de helft van het aantal rondes van de echte geplande race, namelijk 28. De uitzending duurt ongeveer anderhalf uur en begint met een kwalificatie om de grid te bepalen. Alles is dus live te volgen via de streamingskanelen, ook via GPToday.net mis je niets.

Max Verstappen, de Nederlandse coureur van Red Bull Racing, doet niet mee aan de F1 Esports Virtual Grand Prix. De 22-jarige Limburger is wel actief in het simracen, maar doet mee met andere competities op iRacing.
