Renault stelt Ian Poulter en Guanyu Zhou aan als coureurs voor eerste online race

Nu het Formule 1-seizoen voorlopig nog niet van start zal gaan zoekt de FOM naar andere manieren om de koningsklasse van de autosport te promoten. Zo werd gisteren op het officiële Youtube-kanaal van de Formule 1, de legendarische regenrace uit 2016 op Interlagos in zijn volledigheid herhaald.

Een andere manier om de fans toch nog wat raceactie te geven werd ook snel bekend gemaakt. De FOM besloot online races te gaan organiseren op F1 2019, waaraan alle echte Formule 1-coureurs werden uitgenodigd om mee te doen. De virtuele races beginnen vandaag 21:00 uur Nederlandse tijd met de Grand Prix van Bahrein. Tot nu toe heeft alleen Nicolas Latifi van de coureurs op de huidige grid bevestigd mee te doen en haken coureurs als Max Verstappen af, omdat zij liever in meer realistische simulatorspellen als iRacing en rFactor racen.

Renault maakt als eerste haar coureurs bekend

Renault kwam echter zojuist met het persbericht waarin zij de coureurs aankondigen die namens hen zullen deelnemen aan de virtuele races: Golflegende Ian Poulter zal dit weekend racen voor het Renault DP World F1 Team tijdens de eerste officiële Formula 1 Esports Virtual Grand Prix, in samenwerking met de testcoureur van het team, Guanyu Zhou. Esteban Ocon en Daniel Ricciardo zijn dus ook allebei niet bereid gevonden deel te nemen aan de virtuele races.

Vijfvoudig Ryder Cup-winnaar en DP World Global Ambassador Poulter heeft uitgebreid getraind voor de race op het Bahrain International Circuit op zijn simulator ter voorbereiding op de race en ontving enkele tips en trucs van de huidige Renault DP World F1 Team-coureurs, Daniel Ricciardo en Esteban Ocon.
