Gasly vermaakt zich prima in schuilplek Dubai: "Speel vaak spelletjes met Charles Leclerc"

Pierre Gasly vindt het jammer dat hij niet kan deelnemen aan de nieuwe virtuele races van de Formule 1, nadat het eerste deel van het seizoen is uitgesteld.

Pierre Gasly zit evenals zijn leeftijdsgenoten vaak op spelletjes als iRacing, maar kan dat in zijn hotelkamer in Dubai niet doen. “Ik doe het simracen de hele tijd thuis, ik hou er zelfs van maar in Dubai heb ik geen sim, alleen een Playstation. Dus speel ik andere games dan F1."

De jonge Fransman zit verscholen in Dubai om het Coronavirus te ontwijken. De Formule 1-coureur houdt zijn lichaam daar op peil. "Quarantaine is hier minder streng dan in Europa, maar ik moet in het hotel blijven. Ik vermijd de stad en het zwembad dan is er geen enkel risico. Ik sport twee uur per dag. Als professionele atleet mag ik naar binnen naar de sportschool, ook al is het eigenlijk gesloten. Dat is een groot voorrecht. Ik ben nog nooit zo fit geweest!" zei hij tegen L'Equipe.

Voorlopig nog in Dubai

Gasly zegt opgelucht te zijn niet in Europa te zitten, dat zwaar is getroffen door het coronavirus. "In Frankrijk woon ik bij mijn ouders en ik wil ze niet blootstellen aan het risico, ook al zijn ze jong. Mijn vriendin zit vast in Bologna. Het is echt super moeilijk voor iedereen, ze zitten allemaal vast thuis. Gelukkig is er Skype en Facetime om in contact te blijven met mijn dierbaren. Ik blijf hier nog minstens twee weken, of langer als de situatie daar om vraagt."

Gasly verkeert in goede staat

Ondanks de afstand gaat het met Gasly verder prima. "Het gaat goed met mij. Er is tv, Netflix en de Playstation. Ik speel online voetbal, basketbal en Call of Duty met Charles Leclerc. Hij is in Monaco, maar samen vormen we een team."

Toen hem werd gevraagd of virtueel racen zelfs een hulp is voor inactieve echte coureurs, antwoordde Gasly: "Niet op dit niveau. Er is een moment dat ik terug naar Europa ga en het ook doe, maar het maakt niet uit wanneer we weer in de auto stappen. De simulator van het team komt nog dichter bij de realiteit en dat is waar we het meeste aan hebben om te leren als coureur."

  Hier, en nee niks aan het handje hoor. Maar er valt gewoon niet meer zoveel te discussieren nu over de F1. En ik ben ook niet zo´n ramptoerist :p Dus daarom zie je me minder hier ;)
