Sergio Sette Camara blij met zijn reserverol bij Red Bull

Sergio Sette Camara is meer dan blij met zijn uitverkiezing tot test- en reserverijder voor Red Bull-teams Red Bull Racing en Scuderia Alpha Tauri. De Braziliaan zal zijn activiteiten voor de twee renstallen combineren met racen in de Japanse Super Formula. Daarom zit hij momenteel ook in Japan, waar hij door de uitbraak van het coronavirus niet meer weg kan.

Niet dat hij weg wil, Sette Camara koos er bewust voor om naar Japan te gaan toen de omvang van de pandemie voorzichtig duidelijk begon te worden. "Na Australië dacht ik eraan om terug te gaan naar Europa, maar de situatie verslechterde en vliegvelden gingen dicht. Ik race dit jaar in Japan, dus het leek mij het verstandigst om dan maar vast te zitten in het land waar ik zou gaan racen", deelde hij aan Globo mede.

Over zijn onverwachte aanstelling bij Red Bull zegt Sette Camara: "Red Bull heeft meerdere opties op mij, voor het geval dat een van de twee teams verder met me wil. Het is een open contract. Als een verbintenis een aantal vrijdagtrainingen voorschrijft, dan weet je dat de rijder in kwestie of zijn sponsor geld heeft ingebracht bij het team. Dat is bij mij niet het geval."

"Het team is geïnteresseerd in mij als coureur. Als die interesse toeneemt, zullen ze me meer mogelijkheden geven. Dit was exact de overeenkomst waar ik naar op zoek was. Ik wil niet in een auto zitten omdat ik ervoor betaald heb. Ik ga proberen zo sterk mogelijk te presteren, in de simulator en hier in de Super Formula. Vervolgens is het aan het team om te bepalen wie ze in de wagens zetten."

En wie weet schuift Red Bull hem voor volgend jaar door naar een racestoeltje bij Alpha Tauri. "Voor mij is dit precies wat Red Bull zo interessant maakt om aan verbonden te zijn. Ze beschikken over twee teams in de Formule 1 en dus over vier racezitjes. Zij hebben de volledige controle over wie voor hen racet, in tegenstelling tot sommige andere kleine teams", besluit Sette Camara.
