Domenicali over ingezakte Formule 1: "Niet alleen economie moet opgetild worden"

Ondanks de ernst van het coronavirus hoopt voormalig Ferrari-teambaas Stefano Domenicali dat de Formule 1-races snel terug zullen keren in de wereld. Door de pandemie staan bijna alle sporten in de wereld stil. De Formule 1 hoopt de kalender zo snel mogelijk weer te kunnen oppakken, maar dat zal gebeuren met een aangepaste kalender.

Normaal gesproken zijn er minimaal één keer per twee weken raceweekenden. De Formule 1 zou oorspronkelijk op 22 verschillende circuits rijden, maar door het coronavirus zullen dit er volgens topman Chase Carey hooguit 18 zijn. Zondagen zonder races, dat is niets voor Stefano Domenicali. "Zondagen zonder Formule 1 zijn echt raar", vertelde de huidige CEO van Lamborghini aan L'Equipe.

Tot dusver in 2020 zijn negen van de geplande 22 Grands Prix uitgesteld of geannuleerd vanwege de coronacrisis. "Ik hoop dat racen en alle sporten in het algemeen snel weer kunnen beginnen", aldus de Italiaan.

Volgens de voormalig teambaas van Ferrari gaat het niet alleen om de economie, maar moet ook de sport weer interessant worden voor de mensen. “Het gaat niet alleen om ons moraal, dat moet worden opgetild en vermaakt door dit soort shows, maar vooral om onze economie.”

Charles Leclerc grootste gemis

Domenicali zei ook dat hij de voortgang mist die wordt gemaakt door de nieuwe jonge ster van Ferrari, Charles Leclerc. "Hij heeft geduld bij Ferrari geleerd en heeft zich snel ontwikkeld. Elke druppel van zijn bloed is van het merk Ferrari. Zoveel als zijn Monegaskische nationaliteit wordt gerespecteerd, beschouwen velen in Italië hem als een Italiaan."
