Zak Brown: "Sommige F1-teams spelen echt met vuur"

De ernst van de huidige crisis is sommige Formule 1-teams niet geheel duidelijk, constateert McLaren-baas Zak Brown. Enkele renstallen verhinderen immers de plannen voor een lager budgetlimiet voor 2021, van 100 of 125 miljoen dollar in plaats van 150 miljoen dollar. Brown noemt geen namen, maar Ferrari en Red Bull Racing zouden dwarsliggen.

De Amerikaan waarschuwt tegenover Sky Sports F1 voor de gevolgen. "Zonder een veld bestaande uit tien of minstens negen teams kun je het nauwelijks Formule 1 noemen. Sommige teams lijken dat nog niet te beseffen. Maar ze moeten voorzichtig zijn, want ze spelen echt met vuur. Je hebt een volle grid nodig voor deze sport."

"Als we door blijven gaan op een manier die voor veel teams niet levensvatbaar is en enkele teams verliezen hun interesse voor de Formule 1 of kunnen het simpelweg niet meer opbrengen, dan racen de renstallen die zich nu verzetten straks alleen nog tegen elkaar. Dat werkt ook niet."

"Ze moeten meer vertrouwen hebben in hun eigen capaciteiten. De Formule 1 is een gigantisch marketing platform voor deze twee teams, dus ik snap waarom ze de fiscale balans in de huidige vorm willen houden. Maar voor de sport is een eerlijk gevecht waarin de beste wint belangrijker. De grootste en beste teams zullen ook in de nieuwe situatie de beste coureurs en engineers aantrekken. Het gat tussen de voorkant en achterkant is nu echter seconden, in de IndyCar gaat het om tienden."

  Ik denk dat Brown er gewoon een hele realistische kijk op heeft, zeker zonder eigenbelang zoals jij probeert te suggereren.
  
  Ik denk dat McLaren kapitaalkrachtig genoeg is en het huidige budget plafond makkelijk beschikbaar heeft. Zij praten echt niet uit eigen belang, maar zij zien wel in, dat de economische malaise die het coronavirus veroorzaakt, teams als Alfa, Williams en Haas de kop kan kosten.
  
  Kijk, dan kan je als RB en Ferrari wel.je.poot stijf houden, maar een grid met zeven teams is simpelweg de sportieve doodsteek voor de F1.
  
  Dus in belang van eigen agenda?
  Denk het niet.
  Realistische vooruitblik op de consequenties van de.coronacrisis?
  Denk het wel.

  Als er iemand de corona crisis gebruikt voor eigen gewin is het Red Bull wel. Langs de ene kant zijn ze tegen een verlaging van de budgetlimiet, maar langs de andere kant willen ze de nieuwe reglementen verder uitstellen met als drogreden dat het teveel kost.

Al heb je 20 teams, als 3-4 daarvan ver boven de rest uitsteken qua budget en resultaten is er ook geen ruk meer aan.

Mee eens met Brown. Tuurlijk willen Ferrari en Red Bull hun voordeel niet kwijt maar voor ons als fans zal het veel interessanter gaan worden. Hoop dat de teams het eens gaan worden.
