Comeback door crisis nog lastiger voor Nico Hülkenberg

Nico Hülkenberg moet met lede ogen toezien hoe niet alleen het racen in de Formule 1 op zijn gat ligt, maar dat daardoor ook geen sprake is van silly season. De Duitser hoopt in 2021 een comeback te maken in de koningsklasse van de autosport. De uitbraak van het coronavirus en de gevolgen daarvan maken het er niet makkelijker op voor hem.

Op de vraag van Auto Motor und Sport of de huidige situatie het moeilijker maakt voor hem, antwoordde Hülkenberg: "Dat is lastig te beantwoorden. Alles is uit het normale ritme. Er is geen silly season nu er geen races plaatsvinden. Niemand kan zich onderscheiden, in positieve of in negatieve zin. We bevinden ons in niemandsland, er gebeurt niks."

"Op dit moment is alles wat we over volgend seizoen zeggen speculatief. Het is onmogelijk om te voorspellen hoe het zich gaat ontvouwen. Het is voor iedereen een nieuwe situatie. Zodra de wereld weer op gang komt en het seizoen 2020 gaat eindelijk van start, zullen vele vragen zich aandienen. Ik moet alert en scherp blijven en hopen dat ik op het juiste moment op de juiste plek ben."

Hülkenberg debuteerde in 2010 in de Formule 1 en was tien seizoenen een vaste naam op de grid. In totaal heeft hij nu 177 Grands Prix gereden. De 32-jarige Duitser heeft de twijfelachtige eer dat hij de coureur is met de meeste starts zonder ooit op het podium gefinisht te zijn in de Formule 1.

Als de wegen tussen een team en rijder om whatever reason scheiden na dit jaar, en dat jaar GP loos blijft: dan zou dat team voor vervanging eerder naar ervaren mannen aan de zijlijn kunnen gaan kijken dan naar een onbewezen rookie uit de F2 bijvoorbeeld die dit jaar ook niks heeft kunnen tonen.

Zucht, de enige kans voor een comeback van Nico was geweest als 80% van het rijdersveld uitgeschakeld zou zijn door corona.
