Sebastian Vettel loopt niet te koop met salarisverlaging

Sebastian Vettel heeft met zijn werkgever Ferrari nog geen afspraken gemaakt over het eventueel inleveren van salaris om de huidige crisis te overbruggen. Maar zelfs als het zover komt dat hij een deel van zijn loon afstaat, dan nog gaat de Duitser daar niet mee te koop lopen. "Dat bespreken we intern. Ik ben er geen fan van om dat soort dingen naar buiten toe te communiceren. Ik wil deze situatie niet benutten om mijn imago op te poetsen", vertelde Vettel aan Auto Motor und Sport.

De besprekingen over een tijdelijke salarisverlaging vallen samen met onderhandelingen over een nieuw contract. Vettel bezit een aflopende verbintenis en het is niet ondenkbaar dat zowel de viervoudig wereldkampioen als de Scuderia daar voor aanvang van het seizoen 2020 al een besluit over moet nemen. "Die kans is vrij groot inderdaad. We racen niet voor eind juni of begin juli. Wat de beslissing ook wordt, het team en ik zullen ons daar volledig in moeten vinden."

Vettel wil bij Ferrari blijven en lijkt aan te sturen op een meerjarig nieuw contract. "In het verleden heb ik telkens driejarige verbintenissen afgesloten. Ik heb ervaring en ben zeker niet de oudste. Mijn leeftijd vormt dus geen beperkende factor." Tegenover Sky Sports F1 voegde de viervoudig wereldkampioen daar nog aan toe: "We hebben nog tijd, het ziet er niet naar uit dat we op korte termijn een Grand Prix zullen hebben. Dat geeft ons de gelegenheid om in alle rust naar de toekomst te kijken."

Ik heb zo'n donkerbruin vermoeden dat de aanleiding voor het lagere salarisbod in dit geval niet de corona-crisis is.
