Monza staat pas in september op de Formule 1-kalender, maar die race lijkt nu ook in gevaar te zijn. De Italiaanse Formule 1 Grand Prix-baas Angelo Sticchi Damiani heeft toegegeven dat de race op het historische circuit op losse schroeven staat.

In Melbourne, de eigenlijke openingsrace van het 2020-seizoen, werd de Grand Prix net voordat de deuren van het circuit opengingen geannuleerd. Het publiek stond toen al voor de toegangsporten. De president van de Italiaanse autoclub hoopt dergelijke taferelen te voorkomen en als het toch gebeurt, zou dat een ramp zijn.

Damiani wil koste wat kost voorkomen dat mensen voor een teleurstelling komen te staan voor de toegangspoorten. "We kunnen het ons niet veroorloven om een fout te maken zoals Australië, waar de Grand Prix werd geannuleerd toen het publiek er al was," vertelde hij aan de Italiaanse sportkrant La Gazzetta dello Sport.

Het coronavirus brak snel uit, daardoor konden de organisatoren niets anders dan het evenement cancelen, wat een tegenslag was voor iedereen. "Het was een tegenslag voor iedereen, van Liberty Media en de teams tot de lokale organisator. Het zou een ramp zijn als we opnieuw zouden starten en opnieuw moesten stoppen."

Deadline al verstreken

Negen van de 22 races op de kalender van 2020 zijn al uitgesteld of geannuleerd. Sticchi Damiani geeft toe dat ook de resterende data op de huidige kalender in twijfel worden getrokken. De kalender zal naar alle waarschijnlijkheid volledig worden omgegooid. “We worden met volledige onzekerheid geconfronteerd door deze situatie en daarom moeten we voorzichtig zijn. De prioriteit is om te begrijpen wat er gebeurt in de landen waar races worden gehouden, en vooral in Groot-Brittannië en Italië, waar het grootste deel van de paddock vandaan komt."

"Voor zover ik weet, krijgen de teams 90 dagen voor de herstart van het seizoen een bericht, dus als we het hebben over het hervatten van races in juli, dan is de deadline al verstreken", voegde de Italiaan eraan toe. Het is dus maar de vraag wanneer er weer geracet kan gaan worden.

  Het is geen regel, maar een noodzakelijk kwaad. Dit omdat in onderlinge vergaderingen kennelijk vastgesteld is dat de teams tenminste 90 dagen nodig hebben om de organisatie weer voldoende op orde te krijgen om een GP te kunnen aanvangen.
  
  Denk daarbij niet zozeer aan de fabriek en circuit activiteit: maar meer en vooral planning van logistiek en huisvesting.
  
  Je kan als team bv niet zomaar met 40+ man binnen komen vallen en zeggen "Hey, doe mij 's even 40 bedden".

  Murdock denk groot en niet klein. Waarschijnlijk eerste races zonder publiek dus die 40+ bedden vind je wel, en daarnaast is het heel waarschijnlijk dat er een speciaal onderkomen geregeld wordt zodat het personeel niet van het circuit af hoeft. En logistiek ook weinig problemen als je niet met het vliegtuig hoeft de aankomende races.
  Aankomende week komt de F1 met een mededeling over de start van het seizoen 2020 volgens Jack Plooij.

  Lijkt me dat in de basis alles al is gepland vanaf Oostenrijk? Dus die 90 dagen regel zal redelijk makkelijk op de schop kunnen. Accommodaties zijn geboekt, er hoeft in de basis niet heel veel gevlogen te worden binnen Europa, dus op het moment dat de F1 volgende week Oostenrijk zonder publiek op groen zet is er van de teams echt niemand die z'n vinger opsteekt en zegt 'wij gaan niet hoor, 90 dagen regel'. Dan gaan we gewoon racen.
