Silverstone-directeur: "We kunnen twee Grands Prix aan"

Het circuit van Silverstone is bereid om met de Formule 1 mee te denken om de kalender voor het seizoen 2020 vorm te geven nu een groot deel van het oorspronkelijke schema in de soep loopt door de uitbraak van het coronavirus. De eerste negen Grands Prix zijn reeds uitgesteld of afgelast, terwijl ook de evenementen in Frankrijk en België op losse schroeven staan.

Om toch een kalender van enige omvang samen te stellen moet de Formule 1 creatief zijn. Een van de opties is om meer dan eens op hetzelfde circuit te racen. De Red Bull Ring in Oostenrijk staat daar open voor en ook Silverstone is - zeker gezien de gunstige ligging met zeven van de tien teams in de buurt - een kandidaat voor meerdere Grands Prix.

Silverstone-directeur Stuart Pringle zegt in The Guardian: "We hebben van allerlei scenario's besproken, waaronder het organiseren van twee races in één weekend en het organiseren van races in twee opeenvolgende weekenden. Ik heb het volste vertrouwen in onze capaciteiten om dan hoogwaardige evenementen neer te zetten. We beschikken over veel ervaring en kennis, wij kunnen dat aan."

Het is wachten totdat de Formule 1 duidelijkheid verschaft. Pringle: "Ik denk dat de Formule 1 begin mei een kalenderbrede beslissing uit zal rollen. Ze kunnen het niet in gang zetten voordat ze een oplossing hebben die kans maakt om stand te houden in deze uitzonderlijke omstandigheden. Dat tijdschema zou voor ons passen aangezien we geen infrastructuur voor de ontvangst van publiek hoeven op te zetten."

@Canson Po, de manier waarop je dit zegt komt het voor mij over alsof er net een grote hoeveelheid is veranderd op Silverstone. Maar dat is toch niet het geval?

  Silverstone nu ivm Silverstone dik 10 jaar geleden is inderdaad een heel ander type baan. Al is het maar door die lange rechte stukken. Het Silverstone ervoor was echter niet zo indrukwekkend meer voor de moderne wagens, inhalen was er zeer moeilijk geworden en de voorheen moeilijkste bochten waren er toen vlot volgas. Dus neen, ook het oude Silverstone was het niet meer.

In 2020 ga ik me ook niet ergeren waar ze rijden, we mogen blij zijn als ze mogen racen.
